Good founders take a proactive approach to financing their startups - not only to attract money, but also to attract the right investors. So before starting to think about your pitch, go on and meet investors in less formal contexts - pitching events, dinners etc. Or, if that's not possible, listen to their interviews, and read their blogs and their tweets. Get to know them as you know your customers, and do soft pitches to test your best-performing narrative. Once you consider yourself prepared to attract the right investor, start your fundraising process - deck, investor list, intros etc.

An investor's track record is crucial in assessing their fit for your company. Always research their past investments before an intro call. If they've invested in similar companies, ask about potential competition or compatibility: "How might we interact with your portfolio companies in the future?"(You can name the companies as well in this question.) Once you have done your research ask your mutual connections to make warm introductions to the VCs for you. Make sure that when your connection is working on the warm introduction they clear highlight a few of your key strengths/accomplishments such as your team's pedigree, traction, and technology.

The real value lies in connections made by those not incentivized by your success, often found among fellow founders. I'm a firm believer in cultivating genuine relationships, steering away from purely transactional introductions. Building a rapport beforehand ensures a history when things do turn transactional. Seek out mutual connections, give founders top priority. If you're short on founder connections, actively seek opportunities to expand your circle. Lay this groundwork before diving into fundraising.

The best way to get a meaningful connection with an investor is usually via a trusted channel. When targeting investors, analyze your social network and see which founders, angel investors or outstanding profiles (CEOs of established companies) you have a strong relationship with, and then ask them for highly targeted, reason based intros (i.e why you think an intro to a given investor is a good fit) to investors you believe are relevant for what you are pitching

Very important for entrepreneurs to understand how the VC landscape works. Building credibility over time is essential, people who pass on today’s investment may be your biggest cheerleaders in 12 to 18 months time when you can return and show you have delivered on everything you said you would do at the 1st meeting.

Most of the times, from what I have heard from founders sending the 'cold' pitch deck directly has never worked. - Build a great rapport first. Add value in some shape or form- leverage your network - Share insights about business on regular basis; For ex. start a 'selective' newsletter (fortnightly/ monthly) to a very select list of VCs who have shown some level of interest talking about what has been happening, industry insights, etc. - Social Capital in the form of an active social media presence is also important. Similar to the brand 'recall' for consumers, such a thing exists for VCs as well! - And, of course follow up, but not in an excessive 'automated' fashion. Keep the followups humane!

As investor, I receive many meeting requests from founders or professionals who have a business idea, but have no pitch deck or any other presentation about their potential business. I want to highlight how crucial it is to have a well prepared pitch deck, since it’s one of the first documents a investor will see and many times it will depend on the deck if you are invited to a meeting or not. The deck does not have to be perfect, but if one can recognize clearly that not much effort has gone into preparing it,it’s a bad sign and I could come to the conclusion that the person is not really serious about the business. Investing a few days in preparing a deck, will help you better communicate your ideas and increase your chances of success.

Meetings are best established through great mutual connects. If you have one, amazing! If you don't, make sure you are able to make them realize there is value you can create for them as well. Once the meeting is set (in a non-pushy/ desperate way of course!), make sure to keep all collaterals ready. As a sense of good measure, it is always nice to send 'pre-reads' before a meeting. So that the person you are meeting with knows exactly what to expect from a meeting, there is a good amount of context about your company and industry you operate in- so that the meeting's outcome is fruitful and can be steered in the right direction

Keep your pitch deck clean, and practice until you can do it effortlessly. It's all about being real, and confident.

As brokers we now VC, PE and Family Offices very well. Most of our investors prefer warm introductions. They see the inability to get a warm introduction as the first red flag for them to invest. The reason for that: As a founder you should be able to convince a mutual friend about your venture who does the intro.

It is much more difficult to get a legitimate meeting with a VC if you do not have a referral. The biggest mistake I see is that people tend to let relationships go cool or even cold and then start going down the social media contacts or phone contacts, when they have not kept in contact with many of them. This makes connecting almost like starting over. I was once given some great advice - connect with people when you don’t want them to do something for you and then when you do they will be much more willing to help. Networking is a constant effort. Touching base for things like birthdays, anniversaries of events that you shared with your contact, sharing relevant articles with contacts. Ensure that your connections are kept fresh.

We can get better leads and recommendations... through our network it can increase your chances to get an opportunity as a prominent member from their field who is network works for vc or in the ecosystem..this helps gradually to increase the probability.

Especially at early stages, when it comes to fundraising a lot is dependent on 'trust'. Do you sell software? Make the VCs not only see the value in it, but directly hear from your customers. Enable introductions! Getting people to vouch for you is important from a deal closing perspective. Especially when VCs are ont he fence, try to figure out where additional comfort is required and try to solve for it. Having an 'advisory' board for your startups (who are normally industry veterans) and pretty well known is very useful normally. Not just for helping you out with business strategy, long term vision, but to also help with the above parameters!

Usually when a VC tells a startup that is out of investment scope or too early, it is often the truth. So, don't try to convince the VC otherwise. Instead, I would recommend asking the VC if he/she can refer other potentially relevant VCs that invest in your space and stage.

The second step is to make research using several well-known platforms such as Thunder, Angels Parfners, Signal NFX where you can create filters by industry, geography, stage. Understand their investment preferences and read through investment thesis. Create a compelling reach out copy. Find the best channel to reach out: social media platforms like LinkedIn or Twitter convert better than emails. You don’t need introductions to actually get a call/meeting with investors. Many VCs and investors are open for the cold outreach and with a compelling copy and the right deck you can connect with a lot of great investors.

I think my advice would be to really understand that the investor is buying you, not your company, products or solutions. They genuinely want to see if there’s a common bond and whether the person in front of them is interesting, passionate and able to listen to the investor. It’s not a sales pitch about what you’ve got, but more of a ‘getting to know you’ session when you first meet. So remember to make the meeting a discussion and not a ‘talk at the investor’ but with them. But above all listen and remember to let them do some speaking too!

No cliche but take time to know and understand both sides - the potential investors and the entrepreneurs. Their values and culture must match, not just all the books stuff, although the books, progresses and performances are absolutely important and must be presented well. You definitely need to invest your time (and maybe resources) to meet informally multiple times and separately to observe, learn and feel to know if they are indeed the right match to achieve the basic immediate-to-short term objectives
