One of the best lessons you can learn when trying to progress in your career as a project manager is: be very curious. If you can remain curious, things like peer (or formal) feedback are much easier to digest. Here is an example: After a particularly long and disastrous meeting with a customer, a cowork who was in the meeting comes to you and gives you a tip on how to set clearer agendas and time limits. You can either: get defensive ("I tried, but it was so difficult for this one! The customer disrespects my time") OR you can stay curious and be open to trying something new ("Oh, interesting! A time limit for each section is a great idea. I'll try that"). And genuinely do try it. It might not work in all cases. But, if might help!

Agreed with these comments and suggestions! One that worked for me to move from coordinator to PM was to seek mentors at my organization. I proactively asked to assist the PM of a project so that I can learn more about her role such as, the types of tasks she did, the types of meetings she attended and her role in them. We became so close and I learned so much! By the time she left the organization, I took on her role gracefully. Still with a lot to learn, this mentorship provided me the foundation of PMing a multi-workstream project.

A lot of project management can happen quietly behind a computer. But, the real movement happens through communication with others. PM’s are meant to move processes forward and get the work done by motivating and empowering team members to execute the work. Leadership and clear communication allow PMs to lay out the vision and provide clarity to the teams. Emotional intelligence and people-centered approaches allows you to create an authentic space where work is feasible and fulfilling to those getting it done. It’s so important to make it a healthy and engaging work environments!

Communication is everything in a project. We are dealing with people, we negotiate our deadline and scope. We develop trust with our team member as well as our clients. We convince the steering committee about the problem that we are going to solve. We encourage our team to meet the deadline. We hold presentation to our key stakeholders. We prepare the report of the project. If these do not tell you about the importance of soft skill, I don't know what else.

Continuous learning may seem just two words but it has a significant relevance in today's world. Just want to give you a statistics related to AI. After the launch of chat gpt, courses related to AI had enrollment rate beyond imagination. What it suggests is if one stop to grow and learn in this world which is competitive, someone else will take the position. People are aware about it which is a good thing. Please learn and do not stop to grow?? as learning is life long process!

While experience is more important because it would help us to deal with challenging situation, having certification will enrich our knowledge and confidence as well. There are a number project management certification that will help you to grow as project manager, such PMP, PMI-ACP, and so on. With that being said, knowledge can be also obtained by being part of project management community, being active in LinkedIn, reading a lot of books related to project management as well many blogs that provide invaluable knowledge to shape your knowledge. And certainly there are number of trustworthy influencers in project management domain that is worth to follow. Project management has grown rapidly and it is very crucial to keep up with it.

To achieve promotion in project management, prioritizing continuous learning is crucial. This may involve obtaining recognized certifications such as PMP, CAPM, or PRINCE2 to validate your skills and knowledge. Additionally, participating in relevant courses, webinars, and conferences helps to stay updated with the latest trends and best practices. For example, you can explore courses on agile methodologies like Scrum or Kanban to enhance your project management skills in dynamic environments.

A growth mindset is key! Fail fast and learn often. Learn from courses, on the job, from YouTube videos, anything and everything!! I also recommend attending PM conferences to get around like-minded people and understand the breadth and depth of the PM world and all the fields that it encompasses. I also advice you to take time to reflect and apply what you learn, especially in your personal life! PMing is a great skill worth continuing to learn and improve on both personally and technically.
