1 Being too impatient

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to expect a promotion too soon or to demand it without proving your value. Even if you have impressive credentials or experience, you need to show your new employer that you can deliver results, fit in with the culture, and handle more responsibility. Don't assume that you're entitled to a promotion just because you've been in the same role for a certain amount of time or because you've done it before in another company. Instead, focus on demonstrating your skills, initiative, and potential, and be patient and respectful of the promotion process.

A la hora de buscar un ascenso, algunos errores comunes que hay que evitar son: 1.Es crucial investigar las expectativas del puesto al que aspiras, y las habilidades y experiencia necesarias para tener éxito en ese rol. Asegúrate de que estás preparado para ese puesto. 2.Haz que tus logros y contribuciones sean visibles para los tomadores de decisiones relevantes en la empresa. 3.No asumas que tu jefe sabe que estás interesado en un ascenso. Habla con él/ella de manera proactiva. Explica tus motivaciones para avanzar en tu carrera. 4.Prepara posibles evaluaciones de desempe?o y el resto de pruebas que se necesiten para conseguir ese ascenso. 5.Solicita feedback. Mejora constantemente. Acepta las críticas y sigue adelante.

Impatience is a painful state of mind and body, for you and those around you. It can blind you to the truth that one of the qualifications for many promotions is experience - experience you can only gain with time. There are practices you can put in place that will help you calm your mind and body. Conscious breathing, walking, and Tai Chi are among them. Use the time you must wait to build a network colleagues to whom you have demonstrated honesty, accountability, reliability, and discretion. Generously share credit for success. Accept accountability for anything less. If you wish to rise quickly, look for work in an expanding company, or one that rewards entrepreneurship. Above all, do work that you love, for customers you admire.

If someone has put themselves in the uncomfortable position of giving you feedback then use it constructively as an opportunity to develop and enhance your performance - chances are they are telling you as they know you're capable of more. This is particularly important if you're looking to move into a promoted post in the future. Use the opportunities presented in your current role to narrow the gap between what you do now and where you want to be.

Accepting and learning feedback is easier said than done. Negative feedback - criticism - hurts. You have to breathe into it, let it sit for a bit, and then try to act on it. Most important is to thank the person who delivered it. Positive feedback can also be tricky. It certainly feels better - kudos are way more fun than Bronx cheers - but just as with criticism and correction, you need to breathe a bit, reflect a little, and then try to learn from the experience. As my first fine boss once said, "You don't have to like it. You just have to do it." Failing to do this - accepting feedback and acting on it - is a sure way to disappointment and lost opportunity.

Don’t focus on just impressing your boss. Get to know the people two levels above you. More often than not, your promotion will be the decision of your boss’s boss or someone else at that level. Your boss may make the recommendation but they typically won’t be the decision maker.
