You’re looking to drive innovation in your company. How can you use business strategy to do it?

Innovation is usually a sudden, creative a-ha idea, eureka moment, in a process or technology thatmay not find its way into the company's strategy; it needs to be a value-creator for the company. Innovation in a product, service, business model, or strategy - novel and useful is normally accepted. Innovation could be – Product development, Process improvement, Incremental or disruptive innovation, business model or service innovation. Culture of innovation is critical for its growth as well as sustainability. Mindset is key to be innovative e.g. challenge the status quo, change the convention, collect new ideas, think out of box, visualize the impossible (Sony Walkman), Form the innovation team- provide them with financial resources.

I'd start with "why innovate?" - what will this new technology / methodology / way of doing things do for you and your organisation. Yes, align it back to the vision of the company, as the change should propel you forward to the future your company seeks. Think of practical and esoteric goals. If you can speak to the WII FM (what's in it for me) and find a tune that all stakeholders can hum along to, you're halfway there.

Driving innovation involved open communication with all stakeholders letting them what we are looking at and what the business would gain from it. When all stakeholders share the vision, adoption of innovation would be easier, and driving it through business strategy would be seamless. Aligning the business strategy with the innovation require that the business conduct a self-analysis to ensure that they are really ready for the innovation and also they have the required workforce to drive the strategy. We don't adopt an innovation that our team doesn't have the required skills to use. This might need to train your team members first on computer e.g Digitalising all manual work. Having a time to review would help to track progress

In my journey to drive innovation, leveraging business strategy has been key. Here are some ways to weave it into the company culture: 1. Dedicate time and resources for white space where employees could be there to de-stress and innovate. 2. Reward employees for innovating ways that improves performance, improve working relationship and wellbeing. 3. Instead of the usual team building activities, consider "innovation building activities". People who create together bond even better together.

Innovation needs two important elements in the culture of the organisation - zero fear to fail and appreciation for effort and idea. It also needs a free mind - thus if every hour in the workplace is packed and accounted for doing tasks innovation may not be possible. The starting point, of course, is the innovation mindset of the organisation. This is reflected in the Vision, Mission and Values identified by the organisation and how much of those are breathed by every employee- top down. Innovation is also not a lone game - we can not ear mark employees for innovation - it is a way of thinking supported by the culture of the organisation and practiced by a majority in the workplace

Team's involvement is a necessity in order to drive innovation. My experience taught me the below: - Idea Generation: Implement systems to capture ideas from all employees. This could involve suggestion boxes, online platforms, or brainstorming sessions. - Diverse Teams: Assemble teams with varied skillsets, backgrounds, and perspectives. This enhances creativity and fosters solutions that consider different viewpoints. - Empowerment: Provide employees with the autonomy and resources to develop and test their ideas. This fosters a sense of ownership and accountability. - Recognition and Reward: Acknowledge and celebrate innovative contributions. This motivates employees to keep ideating and striving for improvement.

Team alignment with company vision and goals empowers them to innovate within their domain, be it processes or technology. When innovators are also initial users, their firsthand experience ensures solutions are practical and relevant, fostering stronger buy-in and facilitating smoother adoption, ultimately driving organizational progress and success.

Involving your employees is a must! Your employees are a valuable source of ideas and creativity. Engage them actively in the innovation process by fostering a culture of open communication and collaboration. Encourage employees to contribute ideas, share feedback, and participate in brainstorming sessions. Empower them to take ownership of innovation initiatives and provide opportunities for professional development and growth.

A strategic innovation or transformation programme requires significant time and effort to manage and control. Can be a strong exercise in regards effort and cost. Therefore, the organization should do an internal assessment of the competencies and capabilities they have for the scope and objectives they want to achieve. As a result, it may be beneficial to start smaller with a proof of concept and then scale up; or separate the Programme into Projects that can be well delivered and successful, in order to gain trust and confidence.

Decisions about an innovative project are almost always associated with high risks. Many people shy away from risks. In this case, it often helps to systematically analyze the risks. Transparency about the risks helps to avoid overestimating the risks,

Valuing all team ideas fosters a culture of innovation. When employees propose process improvements or technological enhancements, provide them with opportunities to test in a sandbox environment. Here it is important to establish for the entire organization that innovation is not the role of the innovation department. Innovation should be part of the entire company. This is the first way to permeate the culture of innovation at all levels and all areas of the company. In addition, promote workshops and training on innovation with successful stories (case studies) from the business area in which the company operates. In addition, make this a habit, not an isolated initiative. Continuously emphasize, promote and reward innovation initiatives in any and all areas of the company.

The work environment , KPIs and incentives of the organisation should be designed in a way that it encourages new ideas , trying out new ways of attempting things , sharing and collaborating to innovate in the normal course so that the culture is built. Failures are ok and learnt from encouraging risk taking .

In my experience, running an innovation hackathon with a predefined theme based on the company's business strategy can provide a clear direction for participants. By aligning innovation efforts with strategic objectives, teams are guided to explore ideas that have the potential to create significant value. Additionally, providing education on innovation frameworks empowers teams to generate breakthrough ideas that are both creative & strategic. This approach ensures that innovative concepts are not only generated but also have the potential to be effectively implemented and commercialized, resulting in tangible outcomes for the organization. La mejor manera de comprometer la innovación es asignando un presupuesto. Siempre que comprometemos recursos en nuestros objetivos (en este caso innovar) vamos a generar tracción en la organización. Por otro lado, asignar presupuesto a una idea es quitárselo a otra (finalmente los recursos son limitados), lo que nos obliga a ser exigentes y rigurosos en el proceso de análisis de los proyectos de innovación.
