Not to start on a negative note but, before starting a professional role in social media you must accept your lack of control. Problem solving calls for automony and control a lot of the time. Such is the nature of social media, you give up both of these things when you share anything. That said, I would recommend outlining and publicly publishing your social media policy before starting anything. Therefore if and when any trolling occurs (for instance), you can reference your stance on same in the policy doc. And take appropriate action like blocking or reporting. Before you decide if you need to solve a problem, weigh up if it's worth your time and efforts. Wasting time and money trying to manage bot trolls is not well spent!

In addition, I find it helpful to follow brands I like personally to see how they caught my attention on social media.

The most important problem-solving skill any social media marketer should possess is being proactive. I feel that being proactive as a skill is often underestimated and frequently overlooked by many. And don’t get me wrong, other problem-solving skills like communication, adaptability, and many more are essential too… but without the ability to take initiative, all the other skills are simply in vain. So, being proactive is a skill I always teach my interns because it complements the others they learn while on the job perfectly.

While maintaining your brands value and image. Try different forms of content, practice with different lengths of video, and play around with the features. Once you know that platform inside out and you have a better idea of who’s on it, it will be easier to see where you fit into this mix. Then you can start to form your community. With community engagement means more than posting; answering questions, commenting, and supporting your people will sell harder than your elevator pitch. You can analyze data, create beautiful images, but if none of it talks to your people it’s lost.

Being an expert in culture is more important than any hard skill because social media is really a “you get it or you don’t” game - especially when you’re talking to Gen Z. Do you understand the unwritten “rules” of Instagram/ TikTok/ X/ Reddit? Do you know why a brand should/ shouldn’t be on a particular platform? Understanding the users is more important than understanding analytics and management platforms. That can all be learned on the job. The best social managers are the ones that get the stuff that can’t be taught by your boss.

In my experience, there are two more important skills needed to have a career in Social Media: 1) Project Managment - You’ve got to be able to manage several projects at the same time, and keep them on time. 2) Managing up - Everyone thinks they are a Social Media Expert because they have a Facebook page. You need to manage upwards, and get them to trust you to do YOUR job.
