Safety and Risk Assessment is the top priority skill required. This should have been at Number one. In India guidelines and requirements given by OISD are ultimate and every facility needs to follow while designing and implementation stages.

Throughout my experience of almost 30 years in the Oil & Gas Industry, collaboration and teamwork are the main key points of success in delivering projects. One single party would not be able to execute the entire project requirement and the specific scope of work shall only be carried out by the specialist or expertise. Therefore, sharing a common goal and objective with your team members, partners, stakeholders and the relevant teams would certainly help and contribute through collaborative efforts. Hence, as a result, you would be able to create value, promote innovation and build up synergy among the parties involved.

Totally agree with the comment above! But with a good few years in the offshore oil and gas industry under my belt, I feel that the companies striving for cost efficiency are killing the industry. Driving down day rates meant that the experienced more mature guys who know their worth are being replaced by younger less experienced people who will accept low day rates just to get a foot hold in the game. More and more guys are turning up incapable of performing the tasks in hand! but they are cheap??

Oil & Gas industry involves elevated degrees of risks due to nature of job, material handled, complexity of activities amongst other parameters, making "attention to details" a paramount to the successful execution of any job. While true across all industries, making assumptions in the O&G industry is a no-no as it could be fatally catastrophic, hence it is important to make sure that each step is well executed at absolute perfection. Always maintain a policy of "when in doubt, please ask" and promote such philosophy in the workplace. O&G Industry is highly competitive, therefore being "cost conscious" always play a pivotal point in administering work activities to improve deliverables to the client and the bottom line for the shareholders.

Being able to keep your composure and staying poised. When things hit the fan being able to direct & lead in a time of crisis.

The one who lead must be technically sound and should have knowledge to collaborate team and assign challenges and task considering their skill set.Leader should create a team with right mix of well versed experienced and mid and entry experience level employees. So that together they can contribute to the team and as a Captain with domain knowledge Leader can sail the project and as per my experience it’s important for leader not only to be technically sound but also, leader should possess skills to take responsibility and allocate the duties considering the skills of team and maintaining collaboration between team mates. Any challenge is easy to solve when you have a great leader and passionate team together.

For leaders in charge of operations crew, there are a number of non-technical skills (so called soft skills) they need to master: situational awareness, decision making, communication, teamwork, leadership, and understanding performance shaping factors such as fatigue and stress. These skills should be relevant to the operational conditions (e.g. offshore or onshore) and task demands, as well as specific characteristics and capabilities of the crew members.
