By far the strategic planning tool I recommend most is WorkBoard. It’s the best at connecting short-term actions to long-term outcomes. It integrates well into an enterprise-wide solution, and it acts as a “single pane of glass” into corporate strategy.

In my experience, simple wins. Shared Excel trackers within a team channel proved surprisingly effective. Why? Everyone knows Excel, so there's no learning curve. Setting up and adapting the tracker is quick and easy, crucial for dynamic situations. Plus, no time wasted figuring out new software means immediate focus on the task at hand. Remember, the best tool empowers your team, not replaces it. Prioritize familiarity and efficiency, and even Excel can become your secret weapon against deadlines.

When the deadline is tight, nothing beats a daily scrum and whiteboard. Visibility and accountability are high. Adoption is easy and overhead is low.

From a pure tooling perspective, Trello has always been my favorite, however, my new team is using Monday, and I am liking what I see so far. However, as others have commented, the tool just keeps us on track, the key for me is starting with a shared agreement on how we will engage, a shared definition of success, and OKRs that make sure we are focused on the right goals and measuring what's important.

It’s less about tools and more about clear communications and setting time boundaries and clear roles and accountability on the key deliverables. Daily or regular checkins across the team to ensure all moving forward as planned.

Rather than tools, I would recommend to plan your work properly and communicate effectively with the team and stakeholders. We use scrum in our organization and therefore we utilise daily stand-up to monitor progress and remove any blocker. Based on the criticality additional check-up points can be set-up. It can be twice daily or more. But, it should also be mentioned these check up points should not be too much to affect the actual development work. Precise milestones needs to be set and communicated to the stakeholders. They should also handled carefully as I have seen multiple times that the stakeholders add more scope without compromising the timeline. This needs to managed well. Apart from that a daily update should really help.

Time management tool helps the leader to keep track on the ongoing tasks. The tool should have live time trackers which can give live updates of the time being spent on particular task. If this tool gives accurate and live updates, the team leader can also have idea of any task undercharged to the client. Also, the team leader can approach to concerned members and ask them the genuine reason for the over time spent on any project. The feedback will give the reasons for the same which can bring further improvement in the system. So, the time management tool should be more accrued and must have live trackers so it will be easy to take corrective steps at the earlier stage of the product.

The only way to work in a team is to establish R&R's on communication early on. Daily stand/zoom-ups, shared responsibility to takes notes, written & dynamic open collab tools (google docs, smart sheets, notes, choose your tool). Shared vision and frequent connections as people, whatever format it works for each team. So, for me, the tools are the behaviors we embrace and then high value work gets done.

Slack and Teams are highly useful tools for both instant and asynchronous collaboration. The issue with these, and like tools, is they do not come with any organization out of the box. This means that every company that you enter has a steep learning curve for the most important collaboration tool in the organization and search parameters are not able to narrow down multi-year threads to specific answers effectively. So this is my plea: have the following: 1. A guide to your organization’s collaboration tool that new members can review (with links) 2. From my experience, it does not matter which tool you use; the most important aspect of high-performance teams is collaboration. It is very important for the team lead to continuously foster collaboration among team members, keeping everyone in the loop, incentivizing pair programming, knowledge sharing, honest code reviews, well-written tasks, and a blame-free environment.

In my experience, empowering the team with knowledge of the objective, the current status of the project and the plan to achieve the objective goes a long way. Showing faith in the team with a clear plan to achieve the objective has given me great results allowing me to bond well with them in the process.

Many tools and technologies already listed... additionally, I believe in this case, it's more important to develop a good team bonding, sense of belongingness and purpose within the team members. More than tools, team needs to understand, what is the need of working against a tight schedule and what value we/customer will be loosing by not achieving the deadline.

One thing I have found very useful is having bite sized tasks (does not matter whether you use Jira or even a simple XL). Showing small success keeps the team focussed on the next task

In a tight deadline what is important is to prioritize what is important to get done and what will deliver some value for the client. Concentrate your efforts on what is important and the chances to be successful on your project are higher.
