Comunica??o clara e objetiva é a chave.

Leading a remote team is like herding cats through a Zoom call! To keep accountability and transparency on track, start by setting clear goals and deadlines, because nothing says “team spirit” like the collective sigh of realizing there’s no escape from 'that' deadline. Make sure everyone’s on the same page by hosting regular check-ins, where you can “gently” remind everyone of their tasks without sounding like Big Brother (or at least not too much). Encourage team members to share updates openly; after all, nobody can hide behind “technical difficulties” forever! Finally, celebrate successes as publicly as possible, so they know transparency isn’t just about catching mistakes, sometimes, it’s about bragging rights too!

Like in person you need to establish clear goals. Then you need to follow up with individuals and check in. Chances are people will not be fully engaged because of whatever distractions. That doesn't mean they won't perform and complete assigned tasks. Give people some leeway but ensure that you hold them accountable as well with check ins and progress checks. Give people the resources they need to succeed and get out of their way. No need to micromanage. If someone isn't meeting standards then you have to adjust your tactics as needed. The end result should speak for itself.

Ensuring the right mix of written and verbal comms has proven to work well for me when leading remote teams globally. While some updates, info sharing and inputs are much better when communicated verbally, remember to record action with clear owndership and deadlines. For more complex projects and actions with many different team members, I use the RACI matrix for clarity.

Here are two ways to reinforce trust: 1. Communicate the Why Behind Decisions Don’t just announce decisions—explain the reasoning behind them. Whether you’re setting new goals, reallocating resources, or pivoting strategy, giving your team insight into the “why” helps them feel connected to the bigger mission. 2. Be Clear About Who’s Involved in Decision-Making Transparency isn’t just about outcomes, but also about the process. Who is part of the decision? Who isn’t, and why? When people understand the roles and decision-making structure, it creates clarity and trust in leadership.
