Leading remote teams is different, but does not need to be difficult. The first step in leading any team is to define clear expectations. In my particular brand of leadership, I like to involve my team in setting those goals and expectations where possible.

Setting clear expectations for remote teams is similar to how you set expectations for local teams. The critical thing is that being remote or local doesn't matter. What matters is how the team show up, collaborates, communicates, cooperates, delivers and influences to be their best. For local and remote teams, each member should be crystal clear on their roles, tasks, projects and the culture that should be reflected in every action they take. I find bringing together the team on a regular basis for a short standup effective in maintaining momentum and clarity. I also find it critical for remote teams to be empowered/clear processes to perform their roles, tasks, and projects. Leaders should not be the bottleneck in achieving this.

Communication, communication and communication!! Incredible important when building trust and rapport with your team. Once I consulted with a HR expert and he mentioned “over communicate” which means that you might need to speak with members of your team several times in a day. Face time is also important as that helps to create “a connection” with the team. Collaborating is beautiful experience when done properly with respect and professionalism, I have seen incredible results. Ask yourself if you are doing enough to stay truly connected with your team.

In addition, we have 1 to 1s to review OKRs with all colleagues. And importantly we run bi weekly team meetings with updated, monthly deep dive on specific topics and quarterly business reviews. Collaboration is THE most important ingredient in my opinion. In a team, people have ups and downs. In a corporate roller coaster, you may have times when you have personal issues, you're sick, you need a break, you have a hard time catching up, etc. These times would be hard, if it wasn't for benevolent collaboration, with people genuinely offering help and support. Nothing makes me more proud than catching up with new team members after a few weeks on the job and hearing they are thrilled because of the warm welcome and support they've received.
