You're leading a remote startup project. How do you keep your team united and motivated?

I was part of a remote team with the World Health Organization at the peak of the pandemic. The first thing we did was define the goal using impact mapping. Then we broke it down into sub-goals or tactics, which were further divided into team goals (for devs, architects, designers, etc.). Finally, we created individual goals using a practice called Target Outcomes.

Break down larger goals into smaller, manageable tasks with clear deadlines. This provides a sense of progress and achievement. Use visual tools like roadmaps or progress trackers to keep goals visible and top-of-mind for all team members. Schedule regular goal review sessions to discuss progress, challenges, and adjustments needed. Align individual performance metrics with project goals to reinforce their importance. Celebrate milestones and goal achievements, even small ones, to maintain motivation and unity.

Folks - first thing is to ensure you think like how you would feel and make the others feel on the same frequency - elated, collaborative and joyful in a remote environment. However these pointers might help you - Regular Virtual Meetups: Hold daily or weekly video calls to foster connection and collaboration. Clear Communication Channels: Establish open and transparent communication via chat, email, or project management tools. Set Shared Goals and Vision: Align team members around a common purpose and objectives. Recognize and Reward: Celebrate milestones, achievements, and individual contributions. Foster Virtual Team Bonding: Organize virtual social events, team-building activities, or casual hangouts.

What I love to do when I join a team is to select a couple of online games. From card games to virtual escape rooms. This gives people a nice platform to interact without the pressure of work and productivity. I had a developer who completely changed from going solo to team worker thanks to those kinds of practices.

The key to effective recognition and rewards is personalization and authenticity. Consider the following unconventional approaches: - offer individual growth budgets for skill development, conferences, or certifications. - Match high-performing employees with experienced mentors for career development and growth. - Send surprise care packages, personalized gifts, or handwritten notes to boost morale and show appreciation. - Offer equity or profit-sharing options as a long-term reward for significant contributions.

Define tangible, yet challenging outcomes and give the team space to achieve them. They either will or they won't - if they do, then you have embraced flexibility and trust to achieve the desired outcome. If they don't, then you have data points with which to support feedback and course-correct the team member with more involvement where needed.

Post COVID, remote and WFH teams has become a reality of life, and startups are no exception to this. Startups that succeed in such environments are the ones where the team is better left to its commitment and dedication. When I work with remote teams, I clearly communicate the tasks & timings that cannot be compromised and rest else remains an open playing field for them.I tell them something like this, "I know you are capable and that's the reason you are hired. I do not want to manage you, I will never judge you by the time you clock but you will always be valued by the efforts you put in". So far, I have generated amazing results with this approach.
