Keep your eyes open and watch the faces and body language of your group or team. The ground rule of Respect is Key...and that the agreement be made to not interrupt...to be sure, too, that the current speaker has actually finished communicating their thought / question / suggestion...and when individuals have seemingly finished their thought; even ask them if they have anything to add before moving to the next waving hand or flashing light. This also has the oblique effect of communicating to people that there is time for all the thought. Leadership is observation, listening, example.

While technology can indeed facilitate large group discussions, it should be used judiciously due to potential misuse. In a past meeting, I allowed participants to submit questions and statements anonymously, which unfortunately led to unrelated frustrations being voiced. I had to redirect these comments and assure participants that management would address their concerns separately, as they were not pertinent to the meeting's agenda. It's crucial to balance the benefits of technology with careful moderation to maintain focus and productivity in discussions.

For particularly large groups, consider breaking down the discussion into smaller sub-groups . This allows for more intimate conversation and ensures that more people have the opportunity to speak up. Afterwards, representatives from each sub-group can share the main points of their discussions with the larger group. One of the things that can help ensure you gain the perspective of all is to use techniques that are not simply dialogue orientated. For example you can ask people to express their view by standing in a particular place in the room, or use line-ups or constellation-based exercises. These techniques enable data to be gathered from all participants without needing them to speak. This is helpful in enabling introverts and reluctant participants to have their views taken into account, and can also help ‘reveal the system’ in a time efficient way. Sometimes talking is not the most effective or efficient approach to facilitating large group exploration of a topic.

Continuing Kate Jones line of thought, initially, and then when appropriate, ask everyone to write their thoughts down, and only after this has been completed, share verbally. This can be enhanced by ensuring anonymity through placing all written notes in a container and having participants take out random notes and read them out aloud, without the group knowing the actual author of the note.
