In my experience, it's important to quickly test and map what are the preferences of the audience and adjust to keep them engage. And some preferences are quite common, like visual presentations, action learning and sharing, some group activities mixing the differents will help to accelerate learning.

Active engagement can also mean giving time for reflective practice during a session. This allows those who need it, valuable thinking space so that they are more engaged. Further, it encourages those with a lot to say, to develop a habit of monologue onto paper or their electronic note pads, that is not intrusive on the quieter, more reserved members of the team.

Nothing is more important as a leader to understand exactly what your team members aspirations are and actively aligned it with the team goals. Active discussion also ensure any points raised or discussed are communicated effectively, especially if the team are made up of diverse individuals that have different worldviews and naturally would have different interpretations of any points discussed.

Engagement is key - but also in asking for engagement to make it realistic and allow it to be meaningful and also part of the learning objectives. If you are to have break out sessions give people a moment to actually meet each other as a group and discuss for a Short period of time without literally expecting 8 people to have less than 2 5 minutes to have met and come up with a discussion point or solution. Encouraging group feedback discussion also helps a lot too and allows for differing perspectives.

Encouraging participation by sharing experiences reinforces content and provides real-time feedback on your methods' effectiveness. According to Barkley, Cross, and Major (2005), active learning strategies boost comprehension and retention. In one instance, a company aiming to enhance problem-solving skills opted for periodic brainstorming sessions instead of traditional training. I like the idea of having some pre-work that somehow connects the audience with the topic that will be addressed during the facilitation. This certainly increases engagement for the facilitation. Using survey tools and also breaking out into smaller groups are other strategies that typically work well. Moreover, the most important thing in my opinion is to know how to read the audience and understand how to bring them into the discussions of the training.

Reflections should also be used to give learners time to independently make valuable connections between the content and their own experiences. It's the silver bullet to ensure transfer to everyday life. Useful questions can be as simple as: What does what I've learned so far have to do with me? Where can I apply it? What do I still need to understand / learn / do to make the most of it? What could prevent me from using this knowledge?

It's very important to provide individualized support even when you are leading a group. We all should be regularly checking in on all our participants to understand their preferences. This approach can also be complemented by providing personalized resources and or additional explanations as they are needed.

Reflection helps in peer learning and since each learner receives the same information differently, different perceptions will lead you clarity on the topic.

This could be as simple as a quick “temperature check” with thumbs up or down, or a more detailed feedback form. Use this information to adjust your facilitation in real-time. Additional resources should be provided to learners to engage with the content in their preferred way. This could include audio, audio visual, written material that encourages learners to delve into the content. They would have the opportunity to write, think, reflect, critique in a better manner when they have the full opportunity to understand it. Therefore it is essential that opportunities are created to cater to the diverse learning needs of all.

There are so many great ideas here! One of my favorite ways to prepare is to begin with the end in mind. And think bigger. If we’re facilitating a workshop, conversation or point in time learning (about a new product, tool, etc), we need to think how does this point in time moment connect to the broader enablement plan, company goals, career path, etc. have a broad plan and identify desired outcomes and purpose. Then craft tactical group and 1:1 activities for the participants to gauge success. And remember to do the before and after assessments and participant surveys for feedback.

Ask them... and then accommodate what can be accommodated. Sometimes, we want to resolve things for others, but another efficient alternative can be to ask them to choose. I have encountered that my team is more flexible and forgiving when they are given the choice of how to do something that must be done.

What works for me when I facilitate is to change my method of facilitation to suit the audience. E.g.: when you address various age groups, the best way is to have a group discussion and focus on individual examples. That way, everyone is accommodated. If the learning style differs and you have a choice, ask to postpone or split the lesson into the groups you think will work well together. If you have no choice, make sure that all participants feel comfortable. Then be your authentic self. When you are authentic, you'll find those who were not prepared to participate in the learning will come out of their shell and engage. Use music, if that appeals to all, to break the ice. Have engaging content and visual works.
