You're leading a bilingual team. How can you maintain consistency in translations?

In Ukraine the CUCC (Canada Ukraine Chamber of Commerce) has a bilingual team where all people speak Ukrainian and English. Having multi-task activity, we are to find a way to bring people together and create a platform for the successful negotiations. That is why we help businessmen from both countries to understand each other and start business. The team is working with representatives of many industries and expanding our vocabulary all the time. Engineering and trade require a good knowledge of subject-matter of negotiations and tiny details of the process. We learn from our designated partners and do our best to facilitate trade and investments between Canada and Ukraine.

"Shared style guide, unified tools." 1. A clear style guide ensures everyone's work aligns with the project's tone and terminology. 2. Consistent translation tools, like CAT tools, streamline processes and reduce inconsistencies. 3. Regular team meetings and feedback sessions further reinforce these standards.

Translation is about capturing meaning, not just words. I’ve always found that a human touch makes the difference in creating translations that truly resonate. So using translation tools can help maintain consistency, but I never rely on them blindly. Compiling a shared glossary of key terms and phrases is essential. This helps ensure that everyone is on the same page, regardless of the language they use. And last but not least, communicating and collaborating with the team creates a safe space where colleagues can ask for support and raise concerns. And brainstorming with others always ignites creativity.

Develop a Clear and Consistent Style Guide: Create a comprehensive style guide that outlines the preferred tone, style, and language rules. Ensure it is regularly updated to reflect any changes or improvements. Maintain an Updated Glossary: Develop and maintain a glossary of key terms, phrases, and their approved translations. This glossary should be continuously updated. Utilize a Translation Memory: Implement a translation memory system to store previous translations. This tool helps translators reuse existing content, ensuring consistency in repeated or similar text. Establish Guidelines for Using the Translation Memory: Set specific rules and procedures for leveraging the translation memory.

First, I would establish a clear language standard or style guide that outlines specific terminology, tone, and formatting for the translations. This would ensure that all team members are aligned on key terms and conventions, minimizing variation. It's important to keep this guide updated with any new terminology or context-specific language nuances that may arise. Encouraging the team to refer to this guide constantly helps maintain uniformity across all projects.

Team work makes the dream work, and communication is the sole of team work. Putting in place a pragmatic communication strategy will bring all team members to the same page and give easy access to the team's working tools such as glossary, term base and translation memory pertaining to a specific project. Above all, one of the team members should be designated to coordinate workfkow and ensure consistency. That last point obviously underscores the important role and undebatable indispensability of human translator despite tbe undeniable advancement of machine translation in the age of generative AI. Artificial intelligence cannot completely replace human intelligence.

I would set up regular check-ins where we can discuss challenges, clarify any ambiguities in the source texts, and share best practices. This would create a collaborative environment where team members feel comfortable asking questions and resolving any translation discrepancies as they occur. Additionally, ensuring open channels for feedback helps maintain quality control at each stage.

Effective communication with team members is vitally crucial in translation sphere. Is the most effective way how more experienced members can share their knowledge with others allowing them to grow professionally for the benefit of every team member.

These tools help maintain consistency across large projects by allowing the team to reuse previously approved translations and ensuring uniform use of terms. However, I’d stress that technology should support, not replace, the translator's expertise, so we’d still prioritize human oversight to ensure accuracy and cultural appropriateness.
