There’s no two ways about it that time blocking in real estate is the key to success. That said you need to know what your time blocking and make sure your time blocking the right things that help you to build and run your business.

Sometimes when you love what you do, it's easy to juggle the workload & work-life balance. I worked with a business coach a year ago who implemented calendar blocking into one of the organization tools in my tool box. Even though every day is different, I have a grasp on my to-do's and pressing items.

In both of my major careers I’ve been able to set self boundaries that would allow me to have a close to normal after hours lifestyle. In my personal experience I certainly was flexible with people in real estate issues but I believe that it was essential for me not to employ the 24/7 approach to servicing customers and clients and when it came down to family necessities the family took precedence. I was a successful realtor for thirty plus years and always had a great reputation.

Setting boundaries from the beginning is important and probably the most difficult thing for people in the industry to do. By setting boundaries you actually stop the chasing of the deal. And you run a business instead. Try planning days off and having a voicemail message that states what hours you work.I promise you that no one will need you when they call at 10 o’clock at night. You can always get back to them in the morning. My voicemail says that no one leaves me after a certain time because they know they can just get me tomorrow.

CRE is a job where you are working all hours of the day because time kills all deals... I try to implement the 20/20 rule into my day-to-day, 20 minutes of work, then 20 seconds of break time. That can include a bathroom break, a snack, water, looking away from your screen, etc. I also prioritize time with my fiance and dog during the evening so I am able to unplug and relax... But I always make sure to clean up my inbox at 4am and right before bed.. This way I am able to set boundaries and manage my workload.

If anyone knows me, networking is my favorite thing. As a true extrovert, your network is everything. I have based my entire reputation off relationships and it has been the best thing I could have ever done in CRE. Getting involved in organization, volunteering on numerous boards, creating your own networking events, networking WITHIN your company - that's where you truly get to know people... Your time is everything, so network appropriately!

Agreed, Chloe. Maintaining the relationships is time consuming and hard but it does pay off. I have colleagues I regularly connect with that I have literally known for over 50 years. I have known one since kindergarten. It’s time consuming but for me it is fun and as my dad would say, if you can’t do it with enthusiasm, don’t bother doing it! I have known Chloe since she was in my freshman experience class at the College of Charleston. She definitely learned her networking lessons!
