As mental health professionals, we’re often immersed in others’ pain and complexity. The nature of our work demands a balance between compassion for others and care for ourselves. Self-care isn't just an option. It's a necessity. We must carve out time to recharge, whether through mindfulness, movement, or meaningful connections. Prioritising self-care by creating boundaries and honoring personal time, we preserve our energy and ensure we can show up fully for those who need us.

Balancing a high workload is definitely challenging, but I've found that prioritizing self-care makes a big difference. One of the main ways I do this is by openly communicating with my manager and team. I make a point to share where I'm at with my workload and, when needed, I’m honest about what support I could use. Setting boundaries and expressing my needs not only helps me avoid burnout but also lets others know how they can pitch in if they’re able. Outside of work, I focus on activities that recharge me. Dance, for example, is my go-to for unwinding and re-energizing. Finding a way to connect with things I love outside of work really fuels me to come back to my work refreshed and ready to support others.

Practicing as a Doctor and that too in Gynaecology domain, is a blessing and not everyone gets this chance to serve females from the society. Being a female, I have to manage multiple things every single day. My family, my kids, keeping a contact with my friends and relatives. On the top of everything, I have patients who trust me like their mother, their sister or their only helping arm. So to keep everything in place, first of all, I keep myself fit health wise. I don't compromise with my daily workouts, balanced diet and my mental peace. When I get overwhelmed with the number of cases, I am really thankful to a supportive team, working their day and nights, along with me.

What I find helpful is maintaining daily boundaries. I end sessions on time and make sure I have 10 minutes between each client. I also make sure I have an hour break in the day for lunch, an errand, or to do something personal. In addition, consider having a light therapy/client day. On Monday I see less clients so I can do administrative work so I don’t have a heavy lift as the week progresses. Lastly, continue supervision or peer case discussions so you can process your thoughts, feelings and gain insight.

Each person has their limits on the number of cases they can handle. I recommend knowing your limits and not crossing the red lines. If you cross the red lines, health problems will negatively affect your work. The right balance is always a top priority.
