Do not underestimate the power of proper pre-production and clear communication. Infact, it is how successful the the success of the production stage.

This question gets to the heart of what producing is: creative problem-solving. Producing IS juggling creativity, budgets, deadlines, and people. It's finding a way to deliver a vision with the resources available. As video is, in essence, visual trickery - there is always a creative way to get the shot or impact you need on time and under budget. Jaws is a perfect example: the shark wasn't working right, and the production was running thin on budget and time. Creative solution: show less of the monster but IMPLY the monster. Aside from NOT having to ask Universal for more money and time, Spielberg delivered a blockbuster for the ages!

A really great trick I learned early on is to pretend you misunderstood the deadline. You can sometimes buy an extra week with this. The key, though is to wait until the actual deadline to play this card. If you go too early you are in danger of being talked into adhering to the true end stop.

There’s a certain magic in subtly building buffer days into a schedule, allowing us to work toward an earlier, ‘invisible’ deadline. This hidden cushion isn’t just a safety net; it’s a strategic advantage. In an industry where things WILL go sideways, having that extra bit of time can be the difference between seamless recovery and chaos.

The key is to manage expectations. Discuss everything up front and don’t be afraid to be honest, given time and budget. Then keep in mind the (post) production triangle - Good, Fast or Cheap - you only get 2. Plan everything to the nth degree, including a margin for error. This is no time for experimentation or change of mind, though there will always be unforeseen issues.
