You’re in a job interview and the interviewer asks about your leadership experience. What do you say?

It is vital to have done research and plenty of it. You must demonstrate that you know what the values, mission and goals of the schools are. Not only will this enable you to give answers tailored specifically to that school but will also show that you are genuinely interested in the position. I would not hire someone who hadn't done this sort of research as I would not believe they honestly want to work for my school.

During the interview, I would highlight my leadership experience by discussing specific examples where I have effectively led teams or projects. I would emphasize my ability to inspire and motivate others, communicate vision and goals clearly, and foster collaboration and teamwork. I would also mention any instances where I successfully resolved conflicts, made difficult decisions, or achieved notable results through my leadership skills. Overall, I would aim to demonstrate my capacity to lead by example, empower others, and drive positive change within the organization.

"Before you walk into the interview, do some research on the organization, its mission, values, culture, and goals. Find out what kind of leadership style and qualities they are looking for and how they measure success." This advice emphasizes the importance of knowing your audience to make your answer as relevant and impactful as possible. By understanding the organization's expectations for leadership, you can effectively showcase how your experience and approach to leadership make you the ideal candidate for the position. This preparation not only demonstrates your leadership capabilities but also your proactive attitude and genuine interest in contributing to the organization's success.

I always like to speak about the leadership roles I was involved in that started from nothing but ended up as huge successes. I believe to be a successful leader in any role or position, a person needs to have made a significant impact that leads to ongoing success during his/her in that role. For example, one of the most memorable leadership roles I had in the past was to establish a fun and innovative cooking club in an International school that had no name for itself in the beginning but later on aroused the interest of students in the school to join the club to the point of students having to be in a queue list to join. It ended up being a successful club with lots of memories in the kitchen cooking with students.

Talk about IMPACT - share the ‘so what’s’ of what you have done as a leader. Anyone can implement something but what difference does it make?

?? Situation: As a high school principal, I inherited a fragmented school culture. Students were disengaged, and teachers struggled to collaborate effectively. ?? Task: My mission was to transform this discord into a symphony of learning. I needed to foster collaboration, boost morale, and elevate student outcomes. ?? Action: Empowering Crescendos Student Soloists Conducting the Ensemble ?? Result: ?? Graduation Rates Soared: Our school’s graduation rate climbed by 15% within two years. ?? Unified Culture: Teachers collaborated, creating a vibrant learning environment. ?? Student Flourishing: Test scores improved, and students felt heard and valued.

Remember that you can exhibit leadership in any job or role that you have. Leadership does not always happen just because you have the title. Some of my most valuable experiences in leadership occurred before I held an official leadership title. I helped to write educational policy and started a national organization when I was a teacher. Leaders are those who step out of the box and do something that impacts an organization in a positive way. You can demonstrate that you are visionary by being proactive is seeing a problem, finding possible solutions, and then leading that change. You can show leadership by leading others towards a goal. If you want a job with a leadership title, show how you have been a leader in your current job.

Anyone can have the qualifications and/or experience to do the job. I always start with that assumption and therefore I want someone who can demonstrate why they want the role. Why this specific role in this specific school. This is where passion comes into it, talking about what got you started in the career, why you took the route you took, why you believe you are a better fit for the role than the other candidates and what your vision is to make the school the very best it can be in relation to the area you would be leading on. Ensure your vision is in line with the organisation's mission and goals and that you have a plan for how to achieve it.

I would say the following : As a teacher, my leadership experience is multifaceted. Firstly, I lead by example in the classroom, demonstrating professionalism, dedication, and a passion for learning that inspires my students. Secondly, I facilitate a positive and inclusive learning environment, fostering collaboration, critical thinking, and communication skills among my students. I take on leadership roles within the academics community by leading curriculum development initiatives and representing my institution in in seminars and conferences. In a nutshell my leadership experience as a teacher encompasses both instructional leadership and broader contributions to the educational institution.

Although these days Educational institutes are operating like corporates, they need to keep this in mind that products and services are different than human beings who come to learn and are supposed to contribute to the society by becoming a good citizen.
