First briefly introduce yourself and your passion for Technical writing. Then mention the projects you have worked with. Use numbers and metrics to quantify your achievements. Explain complex concepts that you have written about in a clear and concise way. Share examples of your ability that how your writing is for different audience and formats. Share an anecdote about a challenge you faced as a technical writer and how you overcame it.

I totally agree. Another way to do this is by categorizing your samples into various niches. Doing this helps to channel your interviewer to whatever specific needs they might have.

Anyone can describe their process. But that doesn’t mean their output is good. I personally don’t talk about my process unless asked. Because my process doesn’t matter if my writing is trash. And truly, my process would be boring if someone asked about it. Processes don’t have to be flashy. They don’t have to even be coherent if the writer is still able to generate top notch writing. You can learn a a process from a writer’s manual. But it won’t be like reading your favorite novel.

Technical writing is about organising a document in an order which is clear in its objective and demonstrating its usability to the end user. A short descriptive assessment of a technical document that you have written should do the job!

First of all, I make sure I understand the raw material, and the product (be it a specific feature, or a tool). I will use it, try it out, test it. Don't shy away from asking questions about the product you are about to write. You cannot simplify things and explain them in a user-friendly manner if you do not understand them. Secondly, ask a dedicated SME to review your writing as accuracy is important. Use available tools, images, and graphs to better showcase the technical side of a product.

Be careful not to exaggerate your skills, though, so as not to embarrass yourself when given a task you cannot handle. Only mention skills you can defend, or throw in something you are currently trying to get better at.

Since I work with many teams having their own work culture, my biggest challenge is to get key decision makers together at a round table monthly meeting to speak about a specific client's needs. The best way is to write down each key holder's responsibilities in their programs from pamphlets published when introducing a new collaborator to the team. This gives each stakeholder power of choice on services rendered and how to help the client. Since I developed the road map, I naturally become the note taker for the client in need. Then I'm always in the loop, updating results at each monthly meeting, providing feedback on processes that worked. A valuable skill for a technical writer who can later develop a case study or white paper.

It is essential to strike a balance between honesty and problem-solving. Share specific instances where challenges emerged but emphasize how you successfully navigated them. Illustrate adaptability by discussing how you've learned from experiences and implemented changes to improve processes. Avoid overly negative language and instead focus on the constructive lessons gained from challenges. Demonstrate a proactive mindset by expressing a willingness to stay updated on industry trends and acquire new skills to overcome potential future obstacles.

I can tell you from experience, always know a little about the place you're interviewing for so you can ask at least a couple of pertinent and EDUCATED questions. This alone can have the power to put you in first place above other candidates. If you know they want a technical writer, at least get a good grasp on some relevant topics in the tech industry. Explain your writing process and tell them what you don't know, you're anxious to learn. This is the best advice I have on this.

Asking questions would not only give you clarity on your potential employee, it would also show that you are an intentional person who isn't all about the money. You may want to find out their expectations of you, their short and long term goals, and any other relevant questions.

No hagas preguntas generales sobre la empresa (se supone que ya la investigaste), haz una primera pregunta sobre algo general pero no tan obvio (por ejemplo sobre cuando revisaron la visión y misión), muestra tu complacencia con la respuesta (si es pésima réstale algo de importancia) y muéstrate optimista. Deja la puerta abierta para que inicie la entrevista. Si no lo hace quizá debes hacer un comentario positivo como "tienen una excelente infraestructura física". Seguramente el entrevistador mismo te dirá "bien empecemos". Solo pregunta por lo importante para tu cargo, eso te dará una idea de lo que te espera. Si la respuesta no es muy alentadora evalúa rápidamente si debes o no restarle importancia y si te interesa el cargo.

If you don't have experience, use that to your advantage. Let the interview know that you will put in an effort to understand their project. You will study and speak to as many people as you can. The end product will be vetted and simplified. The key is to let them know that you're willing to learn. And, you know how to share with what you've learned. Then you can simplify the concepts so it's easy for anyone to grasp. Don't worry about rejections. They will come no matter what. Keep looking. Keep improving your skills to. Choose one technical area and start with it. Also, start building your portfolio. Build your own assignments. Show some well written technical articles you've worked on. That counts as experience too!

Beyond the interview score, consider the overall symphony. How does your technical writing melody align with the company's rhythm? What narrative does it create about your professional harmony? Consider not just the questions asked; consider the synergy between your composition and the company's orchestra.
