You're about to interview for an industrial engineering position. What do you need to know?

Remember lean is all about common sense. Make your day smarter not harder. Continuous improvement is about making a small improvement day in and out. It’s like breathing, it should come naturally. If you put common sense to your day the rest is easy!

Theoretical knowledge does not mean a lot without practical applications. In order to "Know the basics" we need to practise the basics in daily basis. There is no way around it if we want to do continuous improvement. Start practising the principles and using the tools. There will be hiccups along the way but put them on one point lesson (OPL) so everyone in organization can learn from it.

The most important part is you can identify their current main challenges and add on your constructive suggestion based on your understanding of the company current direction and business model. By doing this you automatically show your understanding about their mission, vission, values, and goals without paraphrasing what they put on their website. You need to also research their culture based on information in their website, their LinkedIn page, review from current/former employees, and articles related with the company. This will help you during the interview.

Understanding the company’s challenges and opportunities can help you tailor your responses to demonstrate how your skills and experiences align with its needs. This preparation not only shows your interest and initiative but also enables you to ask informed questions, making your interview more interactive and engaging.

This is quite straightforward - you need to understand the role clearly from job description that the company put but also from other similar job description from other company. The next step is to take a look at yourselves and find out what you can bring to address the responsibilities, additional skills that can help on other area (cross-functional) and what you currently fall shorts including your plan on how to address that quickly (onboard training, course/certification, etc.) Company would want to see the employees accurately assess themselves and have a plan to improve. This shows you can be their asset for long term.

Being an Industrial Engineer is all about implementation and effective communication in that process. Prepare your previous experience with specific details of your involvement and quantifiable results so your audience can fully appreciate your skills and level of competency.

Knowing what questions may be asked gives you a great opportunity to present yourself to a potential employer. When preparing answers to question, 1st ensure that these answers will give an explanation of your background & skills that you can contribute. 2nd prepare to have multiple examples & data of how you incorporated those skills at your company. These show that you can learn & apply these to a company to make actual improvements. Finally be ready for questions that show the interviewer how you react & think. Personally, I had the question, “How many ping pong balls does it take to fill a football stadium”. The number didn’t matter, but how I remained calm & showed a logical thought process to answer the question did.
