Measure twice (or thrice) and buy once. This is some advice that has been passed down to me. It is important when you have a tight-budget to plan everything out- timeframe, measurements, labour and material costs, etc. Albeit sometimes restrictive, having a tight budget can also encourage you creatively. Perhaps you get to challenge your skillset in exchange for hiring someone, or you collaborate with other creatives, or look to using free or reusable materials, the possibilities for creativity are endless! A bigger budget doesn't always mean better!
When it comes to tight budgets prioritising is essential. Often I advise on saving up on free standing furniture elements, as those can be improved or substituted later on. Meanwhile I insist on investing in lighting as it contributes greatly to the quality of the space both during the day as well during the night.
You don't have to buy everything new. You can find great deals on second-hand furniture, accessories, and art at thrift stores, flea markets, online platforms, or auctions. You can also repurpose items you already have, such as painting an old dresser, reupholstering a chair, or turning a ladder into a shelf. Another option is to DIY some elements of your design, such as making your own curtains, pillows, or wall art. You can find tutorials and inspiration online or in books and magazines.
You don't have to change everything to make a difference. You can focus on a few key elements that will have the most impact on your space, such as lighting, color, and texture. For example, you can add lamps, candles, or fairy lights to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. You can also paint an accent wall, add wallpaper, or use removable decals to add some personality and contrast. You can also layer rugs, cushions, throws, and plants to add some warmth and depth.
