Quite frankly it is pretty much impossible to secure something that you don't understand well. Cryptography is essential, but it is not necessary that each network engineer understands how the cryptography works. You mainly need to understand what algorithms and implementations are sufficient, and how to appropriately manage the needed keys. Networks Security represents a small fraction of the work to secure a system. Coding is important for AppSec. Knowledge of operating systems is essential for host/container hardening. Risk management, communications, and other disciplines are essential to putting it all together.

Strong basic foundation in TCP/IP and OSI model. This will help you in terms of troubleshooting and protecting the network with right balance of security.

To understand network security, I would recommend that to have a thorough knowledge or understanding of IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, network devices and their position (with respect to OSI. layers) and role in network security.

Traffic analysis and network architecture skills are invaluable. Understanding network protocols and learning to analyze network packets/traffic for signs of malicious activity will always be helpful. Coding skill is helpful but not necessary as such to be a great network security engineer.
