You're interested in marketing. How can you become a marketing executive?

Years ago I worked for a precociously talented F150 CMO. His advice on this topic was straightforward; be famous for something! I would add a few caveats to his advice: #1 The "thing" you become famous for must be important to the organization and ideally future-focused (i.e. someone isn't already doing it today) #2 If you aspire to senior leadership roles, you likely won't get there on what made you famous initially. Keep innovating and learning to avoid becoming "type cast"

Education Gain Experience Develop Skills: Continuously work on developing your skills in areas such as market research, digital marketing, branding, advertising, content creation, analytics, and leadership. Stay updated on the latest trends and technologies in the marketing industry. Networking: Build a strong professional network within the marketing industry. Attend industry events, join marketing associations or groups, and connect with other professionals through platforms like LinkedIn. Networking can help you learn from others, discover job opportunities, and advance your career.

As a Marketing Executive, you're responsible for setting clear objectives, identifying target markets, and developing strategies to effectively reach and engage with customers. You craft and execute strategies to align with customer needs and market trends. With strong analytical, and creative skills, you drive results while maintaining a strategic focus.

A great marketing executive isn't just about mastering strategies and tools—it's about having a deep-seated desire to understand people. At the core of effective marketing lies a genuine curiosity about human nature. What drives people? What makes them tick? How do these motivations influence their behaviour? This passion for understanding how people think and behave is the foundation upon which all other skills are built. The technical aspects of marketing—the analytics, the campaigns, the branding—can all be taught.

For instance, I completed a specialized marketing certification program to deepen my knowledge of digital marketing trends and tactics.

Learning about it, Working on betterment and focusing on long term growth should be prioritised Upskill yourself and work on client projects to gain hands on experience before jumping on a role and asking to be paid something that's beyond your limits had expertise

Choose the Right Degree Program Specialize: Within your chosen degree program, consider specializing in areas of marketing that interest you the most or align with your career goals. This could include digital marketing, brand management, market research, advertising, or public relations. Extracurricular Activities: Participate in marketing-related extracurricular activities, such as student clubs, competitions, workshops, or conferences. These activities can help you develop additional skills, gain leadership experience, and make meaningful connections with peers and industry professionals.

There is no denying the value of a diploma: it is essential for some professions and puts you ahead of the average professional in a particular field. However, we live in a world where some of the largest companies were built by college dropouts, and doctors can be excellent business administrators. Moreover, the amount of available content is immeasurable: you can watch anything from a recorded lecture by Philip Kotler to TikTokers delivering valuable content about digital media. The most important thing today is to identify great professionals, placing greater value on experience and assessing the knowledge they have acquired.

New graduates often wonder whether to start their marketing career at an agency or in-house. Both paths offer valuable experiences and distinct benefits. My advice: aim to gain experience in both settings over time. Aspiring in-house marketing leaders should understand the dynamics of agencies to manage partnerships. Likewise, future agency executives need to grasp the internal complexities of in-house teams to better navigate client challenges. A well-rounded perspective will enhance your effectiveness in either role.

Seek opportunities to gain practical experience in marketing through internships, part-time roles, or entry-level positions. Apply for marketing assistant or coordinator roles to get hands-on experience with various marketing tasks, such as social media management, content creation, or campaign coordination. Embrace each opportunity as a chance to learn and grow, and actively seek feedback to improve your skills and performance. In my early career, I interned at a marketing agency where I gained valuable experience in client communication, project management, and campaign execution.

If you see a company where, you think their marketing could be better, study their niche, write up a plan and offer to help them execute it. You'll learn a lot about overcoming objections, your assumptions, the niche and their audience. I had a guy who I interviewed and decided not to employ, do this. We both learnt a lot through the experience and he ended up with a job.

Entry-Level Positions: Apply for entry-level roles such as marketing assistant, coordinator, or specialist. These positions typically involve supporting various marketing initiatives, assisting with campaigns, conducting market research, managing social media accounts, and other tasks that provide foundational experience in marketing. Internships and Volunteer Work: Seek out internships or volunteer opportunities with marketing agencies, nonprofits, startups, or small businesses. These opportunities can offer valuable real-world experience, allow you to work on actual marketing projects, and provide exposure to different aspects of marketing.

Consider smaller to medium sized companies and first place of employment. Many, if not most, of the time you will be asked to wear many hats and get to touch a lot of different aspects of marketing which can really help show you what you like (and don't like) to do.

Continuously develop and refine your marketing skills to stay competitive in the field. Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices through reading, online courses, and attending industry events. Hone your skills in areas such as data analysis, storytelling, creativity, and strategic thinking. For example, I dedicated time each week to learning new marketing tools and techniques, such as advanced analytics platforms and design software, to enhance my skill set.

Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated on the latest trends, developments, and best practices in marketing by regularly reading blogs, industry publications, books, and newsletters. Follow marketing experts, influencers, and thought leaders on social media platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram to gain insights and stay informed about emerging trends and innovations.

Networking is a two-way street, so be willing to give as much as you receive.

I leveraged LinkedIn to connect with marketing professionals, attended industry conferences, and volunteered to speak at local marketing events to expand my network and visibility in the industry.

Identify the key stakeholders. Find the right communication channels to reach them. Prepare your self-promo elevator pitch presentation. And start your self-promotion campaign.

Build strong relationships with trust, honesty and humility. Connect with others to exchange ideas, insights and opportunities, not just to gain from them. Look for ways to generously help others without expecting anything in return. Cultivate a reputation for integrity, reliability and excellence in your work. Promote others before promoting yourself. Share the success and visibility of your colleagues, team and company on social media. Recommend talented individuals in your network for opportunities. Focus your personal brand on the value you provide, not just your credentials.

Stay adaptable and open to learning new skills and technologies as the marketing landscape evolves. Seek out mentors or advisors who can provide guidance and support as you progress in your career. Consider pursuing advanced degrees or certifications (such as an MBA or a master’s in marketing) to further enhance your qualifications and credentials. Be proactive in seeking out opportunities for growth and advancement within your current organization or by exploring opportunities with other companies.

Talk. To. Your. Customers. Marketing often gets too abstract and academic. Keep up to date on the problems facing your industry and you can ensure your ideas and solutions resonate. Stop looking at how cool AI is and then try and find a problem it can solve for. Stop asking more questions because it would be interesting and focus on driving outcomes to solve problems.

Having interest and having skills are two different things. Speak to someone you know in the marketing at a senior position, take guidance, evaluate yourself, check your readinesses. If everything is favourable, find your niche, which industry to go for, prepare a solid resume. Keep acquiring knowledge of latest trends in the field.

-Go to as many events and meetings as you can. Push yourself to be extroverted and talk to as many people as possible. Share experiences and listen to your colleagues. -Use the knowledge available on the internet. The world's top universities offer classes and lectures from the greatest marketing authorities in history. -Don't be afraid to make mistakes, but show your stakeholders your strategy and plans A, B, and C. Help them understand that there is trial and error, and there is no ready-made formula. -Understand what success means for your clients and your company. Knowing and applying the concept of Customer Success is mandatory nowadays.
