I always like to mention neuroscience in that case. It can help us to understand how the brain works and how we learn. Then, starting with the learning theories would be useful. Don't forget to learn about the tools that we might use, like Articulate Storyline, Camtasia, and so on.

I like to divide ID skills into core & secondary ones. Core skills include ID theories & models, an understanding of how the brain works & how people learn. Secondary ones include proficiency in authoring tools & LMSs, graphic design, marketing, data analytics, etc. When you're starting out, first go wide (learn a little about everything), and then go deep in one area of interest. It's okay to want to focus on tool proficiency, but you still need a solid understanding of the core skills if you want to design effective instruction. There are plenty of resources, but at the beginning of your career, see if you can find a course to help learn the chops. It doesn't have to be fancy, just a structured curriculum that teaches the basics.

Professionals seeking entry into instructional design should focus on three key areas: pedagogic principles, technical skills, and project management. First of all, one must understand how learners learn, have a grasp of pedagogic approaches/frameworks and know how to structure a learning solution which will be effective. Secondly, building the solution involves technical skills such as: storyboarding, writing and editing content, and using authoring tools for various media, including audio, video, assessments, simulations, and games. Finally, a solid grasp of project management is crucial for structuring, planning, collaborating with stakeholders/SMEs, conducting content reviews, dealing with issues and communicating progress.

To become an instructional designer in e-learning, you must first examine the skill set required to thrive in the industry. Once you know the required skills, you must check the skills you already have and the ones you need to acquire. Then, you can take online courses to gain the necessary skills and apply for entry-level roles to gain hands-on skills for your portfolio.

Identifying a niche is pivotal to the success of an instructor. The ability to connect with targeted audience communities and comprehend their requirements can potentially generate lucrative opportunities. As such, it is imperative for instructors to network with their intended audience to gain insight into their specific needs. This strategic approach will enable instructors to tailor their content and delivery to meet the expectations of their audience, thereby increasing their chances of success.

As you learn, reflect on subject areas you're passionate about - healthcare, sustainability, social justice. Consider your strengths - visual design, writing, facilitation. Narrowing your focus builds deeper expertise that empowers learners.

Instructional design is a broad field, and finding a specific area of interest can help focus your efforts. Reflecting on my experience in teaching Chinese and self-learning various subjects, I realized the importance of specializing in an area you're passionate about. Whether it's corporate training, higher education, K-12, or e-learning, choose a niche that aligns with your interests and strengths.

Identifying the skills you have related to instructional design and the ones you still need to gain is the first step if you want to start in the instructional design industry. You will be on the right track once you've identified the skill set required to start. However, seeking expert advice and doing detailed research will boost your confidence.

In my experience, building your portfolio is one of the most important and effective ways to find appropriate employment and also to showcase your skills and abilities. Now days you can use Wix or Wordpress to create your website and/or portfolio with a shareable link - this allows hiring managers to get first hand experience of the work you have done or are capable of doing.

Creating a portfolio that showcases your skills, niche areas, success stories, testimonials etc can build trust with your audience.

Crafting an impactful portfolio is crucial to spotlight your instructional design prowess. Assemble a diverse compilation of online learning projects showcasing your design finesse, solutions, and reflections. Draw from academic, professional, or personal endeavors, or devise projects rooted in real or hypothetical contexts. Elevate your portfolio with a narrative that underscores creativity, problem-solving acumen, and adept communication. Leverage platforms like a personal website, blog, or LinkedIn/Behance to showcase your collection. Remember, it's not just about the quantity but the quality that communicates excellence. A portfolio is crucial in showcasing your skills and experiences. Start by working on small projects, even if they're hypothetical or volunteer-based. As I did when starting my online Chinese course, use these projects to demonstrate your ability to apply instructional design principles in real-world scenarios. Include a variety of work that showcases diverse skills like curriculum design, content development, and technology integration.

In instructional design as in any other creative field, it is important to keep learning and improving on your design skills - thus could be done through free online courses and certifications available on Coursera, Linkedin, or certifications offered the Continuing Studies department across universities. Some universities even offer free courses that can be completed online.

If you decided to create a course about a hobby you have, send the course to some family or friends who are always asking you about the hobby. Take their (hopefully) constructive feedback and use it to improve your design or flow of the information.

Continuous improvement is key to growth in instructional design. Seek feedback from peers, mentors, or experienced instructional designers. Just as I improved my teaching methods and course content based on student feedback, use the insights you gain to refine and enhance your skills and portfolio.

With a solid foundation and a portfolio, start applying for opportunities in your chosen niche. Look for internships, freelance projects, or full-time positions. Networking can be invaluable at this stage – attend industry conferences, join instructional design communities, and connect with professionals in the field, much like I did when expanding my knowledge in data analysis and marketing.

I'll start with a disclaimer. There are no magic bullets to propel you to a world where at one point you are creating the LX strategy for a program impacting thousands and another time, you're creating a learning schedule or slide decks. But, these come in handy - a good understanding of learning theory, foundational models like ADDIE, learning pedagogy, foundations of design in general, etc

As an ID, I always remember that everyday is like putting your hand into a bits and bites snack mix bag. When you take out your hand, there is a bit of Cheerios, some pretzels, and cheese bits. Tomorrow, when I take my hand out of the bag, I see Shreddies, more Cheerios, but no cheese bits. Consider a field in ID as a group of skills from graphics, technical writing, LMS administration, to understanding how people learn. It's never the same thing twice. Which is why I LOVE it!

As you learn, divest yourself of the notion that solutions are content-driven. If all you generate is content, you're a tech-writer. You need to remember that the building block for ID is "activity". While there may be times when you are generating supporting resources (reference guides, infographics, video demos, etc.) but those are just part of the overall solution. Also, think about the lifecycle of your offerings. "One and done" just won't cut it, because learning is process-driven, not event-driven. You'll be up against some entrenched mindsets both inside and outside HR/L&D, so, having good negotiating skills are beneficial, to say nothing of being able to make business cases to support your decisions.

Getting started in instructional design has been a rewarding journey for me, and finding a mentor played a crucial role as I was fully introduced to the profession by a friend of mine. My mentor provided invaluable insights, guidance, and even opportunities for hands-on experience. Accordingly, I recommend starting by reaching out to professionals in the field through networking events, online forums, or LinkedIn. Don't hesitate to reach out, express your interest, and seek mentorship, as this is an incredibly supporting community.
