You’re interested in environmental science. How can you become an expert in the field?

Fascinating question. I would pose the question to "recognized experts" how many chose that path and were motivated by becoming an "expert." Each one of those folks wake up just like us and put their pants on one leg at a time... My guess is not one of them and that's my point. It's an accumulated journey based on the steps YOU take along the way that separates your journey from others and exposes you to different challenges, obstacles, and opportunities. What you do with each of them impacts the path. In summary be YOU, everyone else is taken. Let your curiosity guide you, seek answers, and don't accept the world for what it is today as I promise this is not how it will be tomorrow. Will you watch the evolution or become part of it?

Steps to become an environmental expert. 1. Pass a qualification (degree/diploma/certificate, etc.) in a science field. 2. Learn Enviro systems and standards (ISO 14001/19001, etc.) 3. You must have practical experience in the field of environmental science. 4. Keep improving in the way you manage the environment in plan, do, check, and act way. 5. Do not forget the above rules and keep learning.

To become an environmental expert, pursue a relevant degree in environmental science, ecology, or a related field. Gain practical experience through internships, research projects, and volunteering. Stay updated on current environmental issues, policies, and technologies. Network with professionals in the field and consider obtaining certifications or advanced degrees for specialized expertise. Continuously learn and contribute to research and solutions in environmental sustainability.

A university degree is the obvious first step, but don’t worry about not knowing exactly what you want to do within the environmental sector from the get go! Do a degree that interests you, covering as wide a range of topics as possible, and if at all possible including a year in industry placement, or at least with links to potential work experience. Ensuring your experience is as wide ranging as possible allows you to really understand what makes you tick and what you want to pursue. And don’t assume you have to go down the PhD route straight away (or even at all) - look for training posts and work your way up!

You need to get a relevant degree in the bag, without a doubt. Check out the many environmental professional institutes for the types of degree that they recognise. This is important as institutional membership and evenually chartership becomes your badge of approval in the world of work. Don't get too hung up on membership until you are working though. And with your degree, start to get an idea about what interests you: environmental science isn't just one subject. Once you have graduated and gotten yourself onto a graduate programme lots of employers will have you move through different disciplines, and through this you can begin to develop and refine your specialism.

Always keep an eye out for summer placements to get a feel for the work that you could move into. Many of the doctoral training programmes run placement opportunities during summer months for undergraduate students, which provide paid placements in organisations to conduct research

Practical, in-field experience is the most essential puzzle piece to being an expert in the environmental field. Our science is always changing and both regulatory agency processes and rules developed by legislative bodies change as new information is discovered regarding contaminants and environmental impacts of our industrial interaction with the world. The only way to keep up with all of these changes is to gain experience through as many diverse projects you can and in as many crossover fields of environmental consulting as possible so you can better prepare yourself for the emergent changes in science by analyzing, evaluating and opining on its effects to concerned parties.

Make sure you look out for voluntary roles and also you can work with researchers, environmental agencies, professors and collaborate with peers in fieldwork. Join Environmental Science groups, attend seminars, and participate in any community projects. This will provide hands on and practical experience for you, and probably link you with experts in the industry.

Attending seminars, presentations, workshops and conferences are a great way to learn more about your field and keep up to date with the latest thinking and developments. Reading the latest papers in relevant journals also ensures you know what is happening across your discipline of interest (remember if you can’t access a journal article because it’s behind a paywall - email the lead author, they’ll normally send you a copy!)

Environmental Science (ENVS) is a 'catch all' academic discipline that touches so many different kinds of public and private sector missions. I don't think I've met any true 'experts' in general ENVS. A degree in ENVS almost implicitly warrants parallel or subsequent pursuit of a specialization to avoid graduating to find you're only aware of, but not actually skilled in any, actual services typically provided by environmental professionals. Once you pick a specialization (e.g., policy, engineering, planning, monitoring, program/project management, research, compliance, etc.), you can begin immersing yourself and with time, experience, and a whole lot of dedication and academic/professional integrity, you'll inevitably become an expert.

Attend as many seminars, workshops, online learning sessions and conferences as your career and schedule will allow. These are often gatherings of subject-matter experts in and around your field of practice so you can learn from the best!
