In my opinion, the best tools for cybersecurity are available on Linux/Unix systems. The basics, then, are to become familiar with the a Linux OS, such as Ubuntu, Redhat, or Debian. Then, learn how the bin/bash shell works, and then learn about regular expressions. The granularity of how one can use a single command line in Linux is worth the learning curb. While there are now many great graphical interfaces available that can do the same things, without the forehand knowledge of what each command line switches do, the data gathered may no be relevant or important. Also, one must know how basic IP networking, subnetting, routing protocols, VLANs, and firewall policies work before any of standard security models work.

I do think they can be overemphasized, though, and merely having a certification doesn't guarantee the possessor can apply the skills tested. Keep in mind the level of job you're considering. If a position claims to be entry level, but requires CISSP, I would call this highly unreasonable. Without a depth and breadth of preexisting hands-on technical knowledge, you're very unlikely to pass certs like CEH or OSCP as a newbie to the field. Start with the basics and build up (e.g., Network+ first, then Security+, etc.); that may show a more logical progression of knowledge and skills. I'm also dubious when I see someone with lots of unrelated certifications.

Also, and this is important: Don't connect to people just for what they can do for you. Be generous. Connect people to each other. Help solve others' problems with no thought of your own benefit.
