Age is only a factor if you make it one. Be confident in your experience and what you bring to the table. What is unique about you? What can you contribute? What are your combination of skills sets? What are your successes already? What is it you are truly looking for in your career choices? Get clear with your vision. If agism is an issue at any of the places you apply then realize that they are missing out and move on.

Valuing Experience Over Age in Career Navigation As the Chairman of the Career Development Centre, one thing I’ve found helpful is to focus on showcasing transferable skills and accomplishments rather than age. I actually disagree with the notion that age defines capability; experience can come from various life stages and contexts. An example I’ve seen is when we encouraged clients to create portfolios highlighting their projects, volunteer work, or any relevant achievements. This approach allows them to demonstrate their capabilities and the value they bring, regardless of their age, helping potential employers recognize their experience as an asset.

Highlight Skills and Achievements: Focus on their specific accomplishments, such as successful projects, leadership roles, or unique skills they’ve developed. Create a narrative that emphasizes their expertise and what they can bring to the role, making their experience the standout feature. Skill-Based Resume & LinkedIn Profile: Structure their resume and LinkedIn profile around skills, key accomplishments, and results instead of a chronological work history. Shifts the focus from age to what they have actually achieved and the value they add. Showcase Flexibility and Adaptability , agility in behaviours- Encourage them to share stories in interviews or on their profile about how they’ve adapted to new challenges or technologies.
