The use of VPNs to allow secure access to a site is pivotal in the base requirement for controlled, monitored and encrypted access. As pointed out this is only one step and multiple others are required. With the requirement of MFA that goes hand in hand with your VPN connection you have added another layer to the connectivity portion of data security.

A distinction must be made here between encrypted transmission and encrypted storage. Data should always be transmitted in encrypted form. Encrypting the actual data on the data carrier or database is a good way to prevent unauthorised access, but it depends on the usefulness of the data, as both encryption and decryption cost time and resources. It should therefore be carefully considered which data actually needs to be encrypted. Large volumes of data in particular, without a critical character such as sensor data from production facilities, can do without encryption.
