Do your homework. Know everything you possibly can about the event itself, from the the profile of the typical attendee down to the venue. Little things can make a HUGE difference in your presentation. Check out event reviews from the previous year. Talk to speakers from the prior year(s). Make sure you’ve been to the room the day before you are set to speak so you know exactly what it’s like. Introducing yourself to the AV team (and tipping them) is invaluable as they are an a large part of your success. Make sure you know how late updates to your presentation are handled. Late breaking news on your topic happens; if you can add it, you’ll have even more credibility. Pre-conference homework is essential to a flawless delivery.

Know your audience. Know your content. Practice your content, and right beforehand, eat potato chips! No, really it's true. The salt eats away at the phlegm in your throat, the oil lubricates your throat, and the grease settles your stomach!

There is no script. The audience will never know if you missed an example or a point. They have no idea what you're going to say. So there's no need to apologize and backtrack during a presentation or beat yourself up afterwards. The goal is flow not perfection.

Show up early. Get the feel of the venue and the audience. And if you’re not a little nervous you’re probably not ready. Don’t worry about the butterflies, they’re a good signal.

I host podcasts and give many presentations, so I guess you could say I am very experienced at public speaking. But to be very honest, I am still a little nervous before each presentation. One of the best things you can do for your speaking career is to satisfy the buyer by connecting with the audience and giving them what they need. Lean on the buyer for this part. And you do this by determining a few important points: * Remember that speaking is about listening. You connect with your audience so they listen to you, and you don't speak to an empty room. (a speaker’s worst nightmare) * Determine the audience members and what actions or behaviors you wish to change or improve. * Always seek to work with the buyer so that they can tell you what they think their audience needs. What can you do as a speaker to improve conditions for the buyer? This part is so important. Always make it about them, never about you.

The best way to engage audience is to tell stories that connect with your message and is relatable to the audience. People remember stories better than dry facts, and it helps create an emotional connection with your audience. Encourage audience interaction through Q&A sessions, polls, or discussions. This keeps your audience engaged and attentive.

If you want your talk to be inclusive, you need to be mindful of how people want to interact. The easiest way (particularly useful for a cold audience) is to ask for a show of hands. People use QR codes and live polls to capture information which is a good way of people being able to interact without feeling put on the spot. You can involve your audience without them even doing anything - by giving them an opportunity to reflect, for example, asking a question and inviting them to consider their response.

Follow up is HUGE for me as a speaker. My collect form is carefully curated to get the info I need to do so in a way that is not overwhelming or our pushy for the attendee.
