You're not getting the feedback you need from your boss. How can you get them to open up?

Is feedback always good? Possibly not. Establish two things first. One, do you want feedback or are you just seeking a pat on the back? If it is feedback, then is it for a specific job done or generally how you're doing? Second, establish with evidence that the person to whom you are asking for feedback knows how to give proper feedback. Or else you may just hear some generalised opinion about you, which may do more harm than good. The framing of the question is the most important part of seeking feedback. For feedback on a report sent to your boss, don't ask, 'Do you have any feedback on the report I sent?' Instead, which part of the report exceeded your expectations? If not, then what could I have included to exceed your expectations?

Initiate a dedicated feedback session with your boss, requesting specific insights. Foster an open atmosphere, actively listen, and follow up with action points to demonstrate commitment to improvement

Be an aid! If you can help free up some of his time, the relationship would start to develop. After a few informal catch-ups, you would be able to establish a good work relationship. I'm sure that's the sweet spot between you two.

Usually, the active one will get notified by boss. Take the initiative to talk with your boss regarding your issue, ask for the best time, block his calendar, prepare yourself and also keep it professional and respectful.

Listening, really listening, is critical to really absorbing and acknowledging what is being said (not what we think is being said or what we want to hear). Listen to understand. One cannot do that if we are distracted, occupied or rushed. Listening to understand means not speaking, being still, being fully present, being open to whatever comes up. If you already know what your response is before they have finished speaking, you are not listening. If you already have a reply, you are not listening. Listening to reply, listening to speak, listening to reload - isn't listening.

Feedback happens when: 1. There's a high confidence it will be well received. Are you easy to give feedback to? 2. There's a likelihood it will make a difference. Have you demonstrated a willingness to change based on feedback? 3. The work has been inspected. Are you clearly holding up your work for review that might elicit feedback? 4. The work is well understood. Have you communicated in detail about the work and highlighted areas that might be especially relevant to get feedback on? 5. It is requested. Ask and ye shall receive. And don't just ask once. Ask again. And then again. "Is there anything else?" Pave the way for feedback, and feedback shall arrive.
