Too many hands is said to spoil the broth. I would recommend that you first clarify what you aim to achieve. You are the person that knows what you objectives are, your mentors are there to recommend/advise - so first be sure you understand your goal and are able to sift through the numerous advise that come your way. When in doubt, take the risk, follow that inner voice of yours and if at first your fail - pick yourself up and go again. Failure is your way of learning how not to do something, its is never the end, rather the start of a rewarding journey.

It's nice to have multiple mentors. That said, quality over quantity can help combat the issue of this discusion, which is multiple sources of information and an overload of advice. Perhaps its worth considering narrowing the mentors down AND / OR considering which mentors to seek guidance from in very specific circumstances. For example, rather than asking all mentors the same question "what do I do about xyz"?, Go to a specialist mentor in xyz problems for the answer. Ultimately, it's up to you to decide how to proceed with guidance and advice you receive.

There are benefits to having multiple mentors. You gain various perspectives based on different experiences, points of view, and biases. I have several mentors that align to different parts of my life. As a small business owner, I have a mentor who owns a few successful businesses. His experience helps me clarify various strategies for gaining success in my own business. However, for my day job in the Army, I have a retired WO who has experienced many of the challenges I am currently facing. His insight helps me avoid or respond to challenges better. The key to evaluating mentors is to clarify your goals and then assess potential mentors based on their potential to help you achieve those goals.

Without any bias, with a positive mindset, consider the experience and expertise of each mentor. Who has relevant knowledge or experience related to your situation? Who is more fruitful to solve your purpose?

Do some homework. Always. And it helps to build clarity of your own thoughts and the reasons. Consider their experiences, what is that makes you go easy with them and help resolve issues, think of past experiences, look for some data (could be experiences / anecdotes / success stories). Make a decision and own it. No coach could be good or bad, could be what is your purpose. Get the basics right- ICF Certified, following the basic rules of privacy, protection and yes, get the contracts clear and have a reciprocal relationship which is systematic and SMART.

When 'perspective shopping' it's important to not only ask a mentor for their view, but to also seek to understand why they recommend what they recommend. Understanding HOW they think is more useful than WHAT they think - what to consider, how to evaluate options, how to decide what information to pay attention to and what to ignore, how to think about risk and payoff, how did they know the right time to act etc. By understanding their methods of thinking and applying similar rigour to your thinking, you could find yourself reaching a very different conclusion about what you want to do, based on what is important to you.

Blindly following ANY advice, even from the sagest of mentors, is not an advisable path for the most junior to most senior executives. Mentors I have found that mentors advice may arrive farther down the path of life to have not been applicable at the specific time the information was presented. Only to use the advice at a later time. I often tuck advice away to use at a future point in time. One never knows when the situation arrives. When it does. It has been right on point. To this day. Many of those who were thy mentors. Where speaking of the future. When the advice was provided. I always accept the advice of those who have lived much more life than I . It may come in handy at a future point in my life.

Have you got unlimited cash my friend? I believe the trick is to find a great mentor. One. If you need more than 1 why? Perhaps because they advise on different aspects of your business or personal life? But they both seem to be contradicting? Clearly this is not a good position to be in. It all sounds a little bit broken. Perhaps it’s time to figure out if your advisor ‘mix’ is right. Take stock and use the mentors that you already have to help figure out the conundrum. Why can’t they meet and do a 3 way zoom call? Stop running. Pause…

As much as we’ve mentors whose words activate us, we must invest time working on our inner self.

When reading this headline my first thought is that you are blessed. Having advice from multiple qualified mentors is an invaluable resource and it means that you are doing many things right: you were able to successfully connect with senior expertise, to stimulate their engagement with you and your project and gaining exposure within your ecosystem. That being said, you have to manage this resource and adapt it to your needs considering which ones are immediate, short/mid term and more strategic. Your intuition in the decision making process will encompass your ethos, leadership style and will consider subconsciously other relevant aspects such as past experiences, past mentoring that failed, you real motivation and ultimate goals.

Going with your gut, above all else. Each mentor brings their own world view into the advice they give, so you need to absorb the information, adapt it to your own situation, and then go with what feels most right.

There are no shortage of people who will tell you which path to follow in life, until you realise that you are on the wrong path entirely. So, stop. Take the time to choose your path clearly. In 5, 10 years where would you like to be in your career, what level, doing what sort of work, living etc? This will allow you to choose the advice that most readily supports your path.

Not all mentors are equal, some have more experience, other are more conservative, but each of them has a specific strength that can serve as a model for success for you.

Don't spend time in evaluating your mentor: Having multiple mentors for the same area of work is not desirable. Trust plays a very important role in the mentor-mentee relationship. Take the help of your mentor in choosing a thinking direction and implement your solution with confidence. You can decide to change your mentor based on outcomes. A mentor guides you from her experience, and different people have different approaches. Unless you trust your mentor completely you will never be able to see returns from the relationship.
