The primary things that connect to the Internet from a home, small office or enterprise on the perimeter are a modem and a router. Upgrading them can ensure that there is no bottleneck created and can optimally work, resulting in better speed.

Assess current hardware. Upgrade router and modem. Upgrade network switches. Upgrade network interface cards (NICs). Optimize Wi-Fi coverage. Update firmware and drivers. Upgrade internet service plan. Optimize network configuration. Implement network monitoring. Consider professional assistance.

We should work on three levels. Level 1: Diagnose the issue We should diagnose the bottleneck in terms of resources and time. If we found the issues are because of the modem then we should go for that. Still, usually, higher losses and delays can occur because of other components of the network. Another issue can be the protocols/software being used. Level 2: Need assessments is the second step because just upgradation can cause issues of the back compatibility. We should assess what type of network we are going to use and how much speed at what time we require. Budget, hatrdware life, and security should also be in consideration. Level 3: The actual upgradations should be the third step after performing above both.

To boost network speeds, upgrade your router to a Wi-Fi 6 model, utilize Ethernet connections for faster and stable speeds, consider a higher-speed internet plan, add Gigabit Ethernet switches, optimize Wi-Fi settings, upgrade NICs, and update router firmware. Mesh Wi-Fi systems can extend coverage.

Here are some of my preferences: * Prefer wired connection over wireless connection * Prefer fiber broadband servers over Cable broadband, over DSL broadband

1. Assess Current Hardware: Evaluate your current network hardware, including routers, switches, modems, and network interface cards (NICs), to identify potential bottlenecks or outdated components.

Use high-quality Ethernet cables, preferably Cat6 or higher, to ensure maximum data transmission speeds. Invest in quality adapters if you're using older devices or connecting to different types of ports.

Cables and adapters are hardly trackable. With generations getting updated and offices and work spaces having upgrades, there are cases where underlying things go unnoticed causing serious slowness, including duplex issues.

Always use quality cables, at least Cat6 with Wi-Fi 6 or wired connection. Your IPS should already have fiber connection, consider upgrading if you do not use already. Don't bend your fiber cables in a sharp turn (90 degrees).

Placement and interference are key considerations for optimizing network performance. Proper router placement ensures even coverage throughout your space, minimizing dead zones. Interference from electronic devices, thick walls, or neighboring networks can degrade signal quality. Strategically placing routers away from such sources and using frequency channels with less congestion can mitigate interference. Regularly monitoring and adjusting placement can help maintain a reliable and fast connection for all your devices.

Upgrade Router and Modem: Consider upgrading to a newer router and modem that support the latest 2. networking standards, such as Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for wireless connections and DOCSIS 3.1 for cable internet. These newer technologies offer faster speeds and better performance.

Position your router in a central location within your home or office to minimize signal interference and ensure better coverage. Keep electronic devices and appliances that emit interference (microwaves, cordless phones) away from your router.

For wireless network, interference can be a major cause of the performance issue beside the signal strength. The place where wireless access points is placed is not a random answer. Instead, you need to use wifi planning tool to plan it accordingly.

Segregate the usage of your electronics between 2.4ghz and 5ghz. Try using your Wi-Fi modem as high as possible in the room that you will be most using the internet. Also avoid using close to motors, like refrigerators. If you have a big house, consider use wired connection for as many devices as possible (using cat6 cable), for security and for signal quality. If you have tick walls, you may consider using a Wi-Fi Extender and Signal Booster (Always use quality ones, avoid cheap options).

Regularly update the firmware of your router and modem to access performance improvements and security patches. Ensure all network drivers on your devices are up-to-date to maintain compatibility and optimize performance.

3.Upgrade Network Switches: If you have a wired network setup with multiple devices, upgrading to gigabit switches or even 10-gigabit switches can significantly improve network speeds and reduce latency.

Upgrade both the hardware and firmware as well as the some firmware of the network devices such as the switches, Router firmware too.

Close out all open tabs. Clear some memory by deleting duplicate pictures and files. (Computer, Phone, etc.) Zip some of those large files to the cloud or invest in some storage with labels like tapes, CDs,... Old school style. Make sure you get rid of unused apps and games that can be saved to the cloud storage or other storage media. Invest in an upgrade that improves performance such as a separate wifi for TV and another for commuting devices. Everyone can use either but designate each for keeping storage understood for computing and entertainment.

If our network medium is new, we don't have to worry about it. We just need to ensure that it is always updated to improve the performance of our devices.

Enable Quality of Service (QoS) settings on your router to prioritize bandwidth for specific applications or devices. Utilize features like beamforming and MU-MIMO (Multi-User, Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output) for enhanced signal strength and simultaneous connections.

4.Upgrade Network Interface Cards (NICs): If you're experiencing slow speeds on individual devices, consider upgrading the network interface cards (NICs) to ones that support faster Ethernet or Wi-Fi standards.

Guest networks if your wireless AP supports them can be useful for IOT devices - home speakers if they don't support air play or other internal devices and need only internet access. Ring cameras don't normally need to connect to the home network side. Set a strong password and don't allow access. Maybe disable the AP from broadcasting it's name. since the devices are connected and forgotten. Document the name and password of course.

One of the important parts... we should study this correctly and analyze the proper distribution of data to our clients on the network. The proper distribution of data when it comes to downloading and uploading can help reduce traffic on the network and achieve the desired speed.

Another thing we need to keep in mind to get the best performance from our equipment is a deep understanding of the tool and the use of the most recent and reliable technology. Knowing what technology the router or switch provides and knowing how to configure it in the best possible way is essential to get the best that our devices can offer.

5.Optimize Wi-Fi Coverage: Improve Wi-Fi coverage and performance by upgrading to a mesh Wi-Fi system or installing additional access points strategically throughout your home or office. This can help eliminate dead zones and improve speeds in areas with weak signals.

Switch Port Analysis: Analyze switch port utilization and performance using SNMP monitoring tools or built-in switch management interfaces. Identify any congested or underutilized ports and consider redistributing network traffic or upgrading switches to alleviate bottlenecks. Traffic Analysis with Wireshark: Use Wireshark to capture and analyze network traffic in real-time. This helps identify excessive bandwidth consumption, network protocol issues, and abnormal network behavior that may be contributing to slow network speeds.

If the space is too big for one access point to cover, consider a multi AP system with seamlessly roaming capability, e.g. a mesh system. When using mesh system, consider connecting the APs together via ethernet cable to provide reliable communication between APs.

Consider upgrading your internet plan to one with higher bandwidth if your current plan is limiting your network speeds. Explore mesh Wi-Fi systems for larger spaces or areas with connectivity dead zones. Consult with networking professionals or utilize online resources, such as forums and communities like LinkedIn, for personalized advice and recommendations. By implementing these upgrades and optimizations, you can significantly improve your network speeds and enhance your overall internet experience.

There are limits everywhere but the point here is you will be limited but the slowest point the bottleneck so to say. Start by making sure your have a modem and router will saturate the full bandwidth of the speed you pay for from your ISP. Make sure you are using cat5e or Cat6 for cabling to get more reliable and the fastest speeds.
