If I'm feeling underpaid, I would first review the job description for my role to see if it aligns with my qualifications. This step will determine if a revision to the JD is needed. Next, I would look at contributing factors such as my seniority within the role, what I have achieved since performing its functions and assess how it has benefited the current processes and company. I would also conduct a market data salary analysis for similar roles at local levels. Once I have concrete evidence of each aspect mentioned, I would then approach my manager. My mindset would be that the discussion could go either way. At that point it would be crucial to decide my next step in the event the outcome isn't favorable.

If I am feeling underpaid, I need to assess whether I am giving in return to my employer enough w.r.t. salary I am getting at present. If yes, either I am over qualified for the job or I am working for an organisation which is not in a position to make enough profits so as to part away with enough amount as a salary to it's employee.

If I am giving in return to the employer more than their expectation, I shall study the business scenario of the organisation vis-a-vis market opportunity. If prospects are high and are under-accessed, I shall seek an appointment of respective authority and discuss the situation without so o say asking for a rise because I know, I also stand better opportunities with competitors of the present employer. Clarity during the discussion will help me in preparation for my onward efforts.

3 Choose the right time and place

Timing and setting are crucial factors for a successful salary negotiation. You don't want to catch your employer off guard or in a bad mood. You should plan ahead and schedule a meeting with your boss or HR manager at a convenient and appropriate time, preferably after a positive review, a completed project, or a significant achievement. Salary negotiation can take place once the CTC is declared by the employer. During the discussion, I shall negotiate CTC considering taxes, benefits and opportunities in force and likely to be in future, the breaking CTC into a format beneficial to me as well as the employer. I shall try for a win-win situation.

4 Present your case

During the meeting, you should be polite and respectful, but also assertive and confident. You should start by expressing your appreciation and satisfaction for your job and the company, and then state your purpose and your request. You should then present your evidence and data, using numbers, facts, and examples, to demonstrate your value and your market worth. You should also emphasize your future goals and plans, and how they align with the company's vision and strategy. You should then ask for feedback and listen carefully to your employer's response.

I record periodical progress of results from the efforts made in a measurable data form. This will be always available for presenting during the meeting. Documentary evidence on the basis of which the data is recorded will also be available. Suggestions to meet periodical goals of the company are also kept ready studying the situations and in coordination with various departments.This will help in arriving at a decision quickly.

5 Negotiate and follow up

Depending on your employer's reaction, you might have to negotiate and compromise on your initial request. You should be prepared to discuss and explore different options and scenarios, such as a smaller raise, a bonus, a promotion, or additional benefits. You should also be prepared to walk away or decline an offer that is unacceptable or unfair. You should always maintain a positive and professional tone, and avoid ultimatums or threats. Depending upon employer's reaction, I shall prefer to adjust to the situation rather than compromising on my requirements. If alternatives provided by me are being considered, there will be better chances to come to an agreement. I shall prepare a MoM with action plan and circulate to all present during the discussion.
