in a GenAI world im never gonna take myself too seriously because seriously i could be wrong yesterday or can become wrong tomorrow & imma comfortable being right & wrong both at the same time being wrong about anything to me is about being open to learn something new in a smaller group i'd go head to head in an argument, but a larger audience would appreciate more humility from a presenter even pluto was a planet but not today i've said "i could be wrong" "let's open this to the floor" "keep me honest" "help me out" "fact check me" "when facts change i change my mind" "an insight is generally disagreed with by most people" & "if you're hearing about something for the first time & you find yourself quickly agreeing it's not an insight"

The foundation of any good presentation is preparation. Always over prepare because the audience of today is powered with Google, and numerous AI tools . Any shortcuts can prove fatal . Your arguments should be watertight Second be humble . If there is something you don’t know acknowledge it. When the audience senses your sincerity they are more forgiving Last and most important- make them smile . Use ice breakers, small anecdotes to lighten up the room and make the environment friendly .

To overcome skepticism when speaking you can get ahead of hostile audiences by anticipating what objections will be raised. This technique is particularly effective on topics that can have a contentious element. One of the techniques I use is CREDITABILITY: Creditability = Competence + Confidence When you have confidence, it reflects belief in yourself. So, how do you get confidence? In order to be confident, you have to be competent. One of the best ways to counter those who are skeptical is through facts and statistical data. Being well learned about the topic provides competence which results in being respected as a speaker on the topic.

I always found it very important to anticipate what the audience might object to in your position and then address those items before they have a chance to become skeptical. This critical thinking process reinforces your own presentation and makes it more sound logically and rationally. Also, I would encourage you to be very careful make sure you talk to some people in the audience before you get up to speak so you can get a sense of where they may be coming from. This is particularly important if you think it may be a semi hostile audience.

Knowing your audience is key to a good presentation. Find out what you can before hand, and then try to add personal antidotes that might put them at ease. This could be a question or even a story to engage them.

When you start your presentation, take a moment to observe the audience. Notice their body language to gauge their mood and interest. For example, during a session at a factory, I noticed the workers were restless, frequently checking their watches and fidgeting. Recognizing their discomfort, I decided to switch to the local language, which immediately captured their attention. I then introduced a fun, interactive activity—a quick game that related to our topic and involved everyone. This shift not only eased the tension but also re-energized the group. By acknowledging their restlessness and adapting my approach, I managed to create a more engaging and effective session.

Crossing arms, avoiding eye contact and fidgeting don't always mean disagreement. Neurodivergent individuals may not look at you or may need to fidget to be able to engage the attention parts of their brains. In some cultures, folded arms means you're listening attentively or are comfortable. (Sweden/Finland for instance). Before reading the audience through your lens, do your research or get neurocultural awareness training. Change the lens you look through to read the room from the perspective of the audience lest you commit a faux pas that will render any other arguments futile.

All talks and presentations evolve and need customisation even if the same talk has been delivered multiple times. I agree that being perceptive to varied cues is vital. This allows the speaker to adjust the pace and modify the order of the topics, if crucial.

I like to show up early and introduce myself to a handful of attendees. Sometimes I ask permission to mention them in my presentation, or I might find an opportunity to directly speak to them from the stage. During the presentation, if an audience member has an issue or concern, I try to focus on what we have in common and often find myself asking them one or more questions so I can better understand their perspective.

Remember the adage “The more you resist, the more things persist”? Too often, it is our narrow attachment to a point of view that provokes others to push back, in the dramatic interplay of unconscious counterdependent impulses. On controversial topics, I try to rise above polarization by providing a helicopter perspective, summarizing competing perspectives on a topic, like the Encyclopedia Britannica, without siding with any one perspective. This willingness to explore multiple viewpoints fosters dialogue rather than advocacy. I also invite the audience to actively critique the content to help continually foster a pluralistic culture (honoring the legitimacy of multiple “truths”) rather than a monolithic culture (validating one “truth”).

I normally build rapport with the audience in the start and then I try to locate the mischief monger in the audience and try to deal with him or her from the start

Listen carefully to the counter view first. Make sure you understand the points made - I often repeat back what was said to establish a baseline for a response. I will respond directly to their points after which I will invite the person to find me afterwards to discuss further. Large format presentations are the wrong place to debate and refute on a 1-1 basis. You just end up alienating the rest of the audience.

Ask the person to elaborate on their point. Listen attentively and empathetically. Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Acknowledge any valid points in their objection. Then, return to your own point by discussing different scenarios.

Objections can be well-founded and enlightening, in which case they are the start of an interesting discussion. Being open to differing opinions is important and should not be seen as a lack of confidence in your subject matter. Quite on the contrary, being able to take on board an opposing viewpoint and develop a cogent discussion is a sign of confidence, expertise and intellectual curiosity.

Confidence is the game changer of all. You will be half way through if you are confident. Practice the speech well to be confident and prepare for counter objections on all scales to have thorough idea on the topic given.

I love presenting but I have autism, PTSD, and anxiety. Sometimes my words can't get out all at once (especially if someone comes up from the side and triggers a response). I've learned to allow myself to let my service dog do her job and I just let the audience know what's going on and give me a moment. Within 10 seconds I'm back to presenting like nothing happened (just from the ground with my dog). It's vulnerable, but that's how we start dialogue about disabilities AND show that we can be as confident as the next person.

Adapting to be flexible can work out in your favor. I remember being challenged by an audience member after a film screening questioning our (the police) approach to people experiencing a mental health crisis. I kept an open mind and listened to the concern. There are times when we can agree to disagree but there are times when we can learn and grow. By becoming flexible, allows you to have an open mindset. We don’t know what we don’t know so be flexible and validate others when you can. Don’t try to be so busy making a point that you forget that you are there to make a difference.

Most important point to remember for a speaker is to be flexible, on reading the room and gauging responses, modify the speech accordinly, even cutting it short if need be. Deflecting the mood of your presentation or even switching it all off and speaking candidly

Be flexible and ready to adjust your presentation based on the audience’s reactions. If something isn’t working, try another approach. Showing that you’re attentive to their needs and willing to engage in dialogue can make a big difference

Agreed, having an open mind sets us up to limitless possibilities. We have to cultivate a culture of being able to entertain a thought/idea without necessarily accepting it. Therefore, when the audience has divergent opinions, it is okay to be vulnerable and accept that you are speaking from a point of limited knowledge.

This is where a deep understanding of a topic will enable you to extract layers of content and pivot to the needs of the audience and where THEY want to take the discussion. This is a two-way process, it is one where feedback, and more critically adapting to feedback is key.

Be careful not to alienate the audience by arguing with an audience member. Even if you win - you lose. You need to be able to share your opinion in a non - threatening manner. Most of the time it's them against you. This is not always the case.

Welcome objections and skepticism as active engagement with and consideration of your argument. Acknowledge objections and if they are well-considered show them appreciation and respect by addressing them. However, beware of two pitfalls when facing objections and skepticism: 1) Re-Framing - if an objector reframes your topic and successfully overcomes your framing, your argument will fail or already has failed. Be vigilant for reframing and act decisively to control the frame by restating the objection in your framing. 2) Pointless negativity - if an audience member attacks your argument (or you) with negativity not grounded in thoughtful consideration, do not address it directly, but rather, thank them and confidently move on.
