To maintain trust and collaboration during project delays, communicate openly with stakeholders about the challenges and updated timelines. Be transparent about the causes of setbacks, proactively share any progress made, and involve them in decision-making to demonstrate respect for their input. Offer realistic solutions and maintain a focus on shared goals, showing commitment to delivering quality outcomes despite delays.

This is always challenging, but here are key steps that can help: 1. Inform stakeholders as soon as delays occur, showing them the impacts and potential solutions. Value their input to promote collaboration. 2. If you have flexibility, reschedule the project and update stakeholders on revised priorities. 3. Don’t avoid responsibility, even if the delay is beyond your control. This reinforces trust. 4. Review the Risk Management Plan (RMP) and identify ways to mitigate the delay’s impact and get the project back on track. 5. Increase Follow-Up and share any progress and thank stakeholders for their continuous efforts to maintain collaboration.

Be transparent about the setbacks, timelines and what needs to be done. Try to work together to come up with revised priorities and timelines. If all the stakeholders are on the same page, and all share the same stakes, then its easier to adapt to new realities.

One thing I have found helpful is to always keep your stakeholders closer and communicate effectively with facts. To build a strong relation with trust is to let them know of delays the same way as wins. This helps the stakeholders also understand their product and what it takes to deliver better. It also creates an expectation of what to think about and how existing delays may be mitigated in future projects. It might not be easy in the beginning but it is always better than creating unwanted expectations and goals, loosing trust that are not based on facts. Plan better.
