The leaders I admire most have pretty extensive track records of putting together teams of rivals. If there are naysayers on your team who believe they need to take down others to succeed, then you must find ways to make them empathize with their supposed rivals. Sometimes this is about physical proximity. It’s difficult to unfairly critique someone (or more likely, someone’s work) if you’re looking them in the eyes. It’s even more difficult if you’re hearing their perspective, seeing their decision making rationale, and if you spend even a minute talking about each other’s personal lives. This is the root of collaboration. My favorite example is a mentor who put two rivals in a suite together and told them, “Left hand, meet right hand.”
