You're facing gaps in your career progression. How can you effectively address them during an interview?

Be honest about the reasons for the gaps. Whether it was due to personal reasons, further education, or a career shift, take ownership and present it confidently without making excuses.

Gaps in your career? Why are you highlighting them in an interview? If you are OVERLY worried about them, or your resume still shows them... well, in the very first question you are asked in an interview do a side quest byline- I have worked in many areas over the years, spent time helping family (insert situation here in 2 words max) and took the time to figure out what I truly want during my career growth. Your company appears the perfect fit for me and my experience is something I know you will be excited to learn about today. After that, they can't knock you down with it. Don't worry about career gaps. If you are dealing with an inexperienced interviewer they may harp on it- but do you want to work for a company like that?

The first important thing is to keep an open and transparent communication with the recruiters during the round of interview. Explain the reasons for the gaps such as higher studies, health challenges, career gap, family responsibilities, change in job field /career diversion etc. which will be the right approach.

Employers are risk averse and gaps frighten if not completely horrify many of them. And kinda rightly so. From their perspective they have to get this hire “RIGHT” and they have a ton riding on this decision, financially, accountability-wise, morale, production, etc. They wanna know the reasons you have gaps, what caused them, who’s fault or reason it was, and try and get an idea of how you make decisions, loyalty, and time you plan to be with them if they hire you. All that being said, that doesn’t mean they SHOULD be as skittish as they are and you can help answer/quell their fears by: 1. Minimize/eliminate gaps on your resume especially those that are irrelevant 2. Be honest about your gaps & rehearse your value add

Instead of trying to hide your career gap, focus on what you learned from the experience and any new skills or different perspectives that you gained during your time out of the workforce. Focus on what you have done to keep your skills current, maintain your network and be ready to hit the ground running in a new role.

Show How It Was Beneficial: Frame the gap as a time when you improved your skills, focused on personal development, or reassessed your career direction. This shows growth rather than stagnation. Highlight Overcoming Challenges: If your gap was due to challenging circumstances, briefly mention how overcoming those challenges built your resilience or taught you valuable life lessons that now enhance your professional approach.

It is very crucial that we convince recruiter how was this gap beneficial. Explain valuable skills / competencies you developed during this gap. We must focus on what you have learnt new or how you overcome a challenging situation. This approach will demonstrate your proactive nature, adaptability and continuous learnings.

Explain relevant project/activities completed during the gap and focus on those learnings. Tell you have attended any functional events, or have completed any activities, attended any trainings which show your proactive approach staying updated and connected.

Showcase transferable skills by highlighting any freelance work, personal projects, or volunteer efforts you engaged in during your gap, focusing on how these activities involved relevant skills like problem-solving, project management, or communication. Additionally, connect these experiences to measurable outcomes by providing concrete examples, such as completing a certification or contributing to a project that achieved positive results.

Tailor your explanation to the specific role you’re applying for by highlighting how the skills or insights gained during your career gap directly apply to the job’s requirements. Additionally, demonstrate your industry knowledge by showing that you stayed engaged with industry trends through following relevant news, participating in online communities, or pursuing professional development, even during the gap.

Shift the conversation towards your enthusiasm for the future. Highlight how you’re ready and prepared to move forward in your career and how this role aligns with your goals.

Express the eagerness to return to a role and how the gap has well prepared you to contribute even more effectively. Focus on proactive planning, long term vision, innovative thinking etc. This will demonstrate that despite the gap, you’re ready to take up the position.

Release any shame you have around career gaps. Life happens. Care-giving for children or sick family members is valuable work. In America, navigating the health care system requires tenacity, creativity, organization, and communication. These things are important. Did you decide to travel for a year? Great! You widened your scope. Did you go back to school for a time because you found your passion later in life? Fantastic. You'll be driven in your purpose. Following a direct path is often a luxury not afforded to everyone. Own it.

Maintain a confident tone and avoid being defensive. Interviewers take cues from how you handle the topic, so speak assertively and steer the conversation towards your strengths and qualifications.

To maintain confidence level throughout the interview process, focus on clear communication, demonstrating your learning, and providing concrete examples that showcase your abilities. Mention your learnings with specific examples. Quote references on overcoming challenges, stay attentive and show interest for the role. Focus specifically on those points which can help you convey your confidence and readiness level.
