You're facing doubts about your sources in an academic presentation. How can you address them tactfully?

I think that the number one rule should be, "When it doubt, leave it out." People from different disciplines interpret this much differently than I do. My approach is as a public speaking teacher. If the doubt occurs prior to the presentation, leave the sources out. If you aren't confident in your sources, you won't have a confident and successful presentation.

1. Share where the source is from. 2. Give them a list of references (before your presentation). 3. Show how the source is relevant to the point you're making.

A presentation should always be designed with the audience in mind. So you can anticipate possible concerns about your data sources. If you are confident in your selection process, you will convey that confidence in your presentation. Reflexivity is also important; know and understand your own biases. Identify information both in favor of and against your proposal to create a balanced and nuanced discussion.

Understanding the veracity (or lack thereof) of your sources is important. If you are presenting, you should be well-versed in all of your sources' strengths and weaknesses. You should be able to articulate why those weaknesses are there and what you have done in your research methods to adequately address them. This conveys confidence to your audience and invites them into your research in a robust way.

Every source you can use will have strengths and weaknesses. If there is a source that you don’t feel is quite as strong as the others you’re using, take a moment to reflect on why you’re using it. That way, if a question about the source comes up, you’re prepared to offer an explanation as to its strengths which shows that you haven’t overlooked the potential concerns but you thought critically and ultimately decided that the source was beneficial and important to the project for specific reasons that you can share.

Building on the advice from point 1, reflexivity allows you to actively engage with your own biases. This happened to me in my master's dissertation. Initially, my selection of sources for the literature review was guided by my own perception of the problem. However, refocusing on the objective helped me expand my range of sources, resulting in a more nuanced academic conversation. That said, I new that my point of view was still there, so I prepared myself to present the reasoning behind each source. The day of the presentation, I felt ready. At the end of the day, your ability to defend a reasoning is equally important.

When facing critiques, allow the 'doubter' to explain their reasoning. This can enrich the academic conversation. If you can both defend your arguments with strong sources and make the other person feel heard, they may rephrase their questioning into suggestions. This shifts the focus from the validity of your sources to how you can enhance your study
