For instance, suppose there's a disagreement between team members regarding project direction. Instead of avoiding it, I'd propose a meeting encouraging open dialogue. I believe the very first step to identify source would be starting with a clear slate. Although previous experiences with people does matter and can show a repeating behaviour, at the very first instance, it is better to keep all the previous experiences aside. This will make you keep the biases away which will result in a fair judgement of the overall situation. Rather than asking a straight question aiming to understand the source directly, better to listen to both the sides and then make your own judgement, come to a conclusion and then you can confirm if that is the same source of the issue.

It is always beneficial to aim for ‘golden mid’, i.e. to reach to a solution that offers both the parties what they need or at least part of what they need. From personal experience I would suggest to never go for temporary fix. Temporary fix opens up gates to further complexity in the future. So make sure to diffuse the situation in a way that it won’t be a reoccurring instance. If you can’t bring both the parties on one table to reach the ‘golden mid’, try to communicate the expectations precisely. Although you can analyse and find a solution by yourself, but it would be highly fruitful if you can make both the parties talk each other to a solution.

I often find it's best to address the conflict before it becomes a bigger issue. Small quarrels can turn into breaking points if they're left to fester and grow over time. Don't become resentful of your colleagues or subordinates. Ensure you're taking proper ownership and leading when you're called upon. There is no such thing as a bad team, only bad leaders.
