You're facing conflicting opinions on system architecture changes. How do you ensure a unified approach?

"It Depends" is the software architect's answer to most questions. But a good architect will always add a second part to the sentence - what it depends on. Context is king when it comes to software architecture. One can only evaluate a solution's validity by understanding the constraints and motivation that led to that decision. First and foremost - communicate with business stakeholders. Understand the business goals. For example, a solution for a problem that requires a quick time to market differs significantly from one we can plan for. Next, mix in the technical constraints and personnel limitations and convey all of these in a clear, concise manner. This analysis is the basis of a fruitful, practical discussion.

Understand the concerns from the business users and stakeholders. Find out the gaps and objective of the solution. What is the value we are trying to get in long term. Based on such discussion unified approach would come up itself.

- we had conflicting opinions upgrading our network to support a new range of IoT devices, and there was a significant disagreement between the networking team and the IoT device team regarding the optimal network architecture. The networking team advocated for a traditional, hierarchical network design, while the IoT team pushed for a more flexible, mesh network approach. - I scheduled meetings with both teams to understand their concerns and requirements. - I created a comprehensive document listing all the concerns, suggestions, and requirements from both teams to ensure nothing was overlooked.

Based on the Documentation & Meeting conducted in point 1 "Gathering Insights " next step is to Analyze the Current Situation for me it was - Network Assessment: Led a detailed assessment of our current network infrastructure, identifying areas that needed upgrades to support the new IoT devices. - IoT Requirements: Worked closely with the IoT team to understand the specific requirements and constraints of the devices, such as bandwidth needs, latency tolerance, and security considerations.

It is possible that there are multiple target state architecture that can satisfy business requirements hence there is a need to consider trade-off between different alternatives. Single alternative will not satisfy the need of all stakehokders hence conflict will arise. Following factors can be considered in selecting best alternatives - Facilitate reviews with stakehokders about strength and weakness of each alternative - Alternatives should be alignged with architect vision, requirement and architecture principles - Funding required to implement each alternatives - Select best possible alternative or combine required features from each alternative to arrive on the best one which is in interest of each stakeholders

There is always a trade-off, as an architect it is our responsibility to understand which trade-offs we are willing to take based upon the requirements in hand here is my approach with the situation I was in Define Success Metrics: We defined clear success metrics, including improved network performance, enhanced security, and seamless integration of IoT devices. Align with Business Objectives: Ensured that the network upgrade aligned with broader business objectives, such as improving operational efficiency and enabling new IoT-driven services. based upon which the trade-offs were discussed.

one of the great way to validate the hypothesis is to build a prototype or a mathematical model that can provide you following insights , here is what I was looking forward for the prototype to disclose 1. Technical Feasibility 2. Impact Analysis 3. Risk Assessment also never forget to document everything

- Always keep your key stockholders updated via solid documentation & meetings if feasible or applicable, - Ensure to take feedback on the architecture you have built & always have review session, - Understand what went wrong & iterate wisely, - Always think from the perspective of requirement, know to prioritise feedback based upon your requirements

Documentation This one of the important aspects of system architecture. Proper documentation always helps the engineering and customers. There are multiple documentation needed for design and requirements. Also traceability would help the coverage. Release notes and application notes would help the external users. They will be aware of the new APIs,the obsolete ones,the modified ones.
