While listening is an important aspect in understanding the conflict, i believe that critical thinking also helps at the same time. Both the things need to be served together to be able to understand the conflicts better and to facilitate conflict management.

Empathy is considered to be a life skill. If the leader/manager is empathetic and is able to relate to the root cause of the issues, they would be able to handle/ facilitate it better. A lot of times, when we are unable to empathize/ understand the root cause of the conflict, we tent to take biased decision, which may have repercussions. Rapport also has a vital role in handling conflicts. If the leader has a good rapport with the team, it helps the team members and the leader himself be more transparent about the causes and the resolution step. They would also be able to communicate better about how they feel about the issue and the resolution, which serves as a feedback.

Instead of calling creative problem solving, i believe "effective problem solving' can help better. Not every creative problem solving technique serves effectively. However, as a leader, problem solving is a skill that is expected in any situation. Having an open mind, per se, will serve better in all the situations. The best way to facilitate conflict resolution and problem solving is by understanding the situation from all the corners, in-depth and taking an un-biased call to resolve it.

I dont use the terminology “win win” with respect to conflict resolution. After being a mediator for many years I can say that people in conflict did not describe the resolution as a win win but more as a mutually satisfactory agreement, or an agreement they could live with and support. Words matter. The words Win win remind many people of contest (winners and losers) or a fight. So using terminology like a mutually satisfactory agreement better frames collaboration. Words matter.

Although a 'mutually satisfactory agreement' is better than a 'mutually disappointing agreement' it always sounds to me to be a bit lacking in ambition and energy. It's the word "satisfactory" that weakens the expression too much. I believe in encouraging parties to seek out the 'win/win scenario', even if they end up only at a 'mutually satisfactory agreement'. If you can get the parties into a truly collaborative mindset, you should be able to assist them to find an outcome that is better than merely 'satisfactory'.

I agree with Charmaine Hammond, words are critical when it comes to resolving issues The win-win is often positioned as "you get a little, I get a little" but the reality is people see that they have to give a little or lose a little to make the other person happy. The sacrifice can become a root of future issues. And as Charmaine shared, people rarely see a win-win in a positive way. I prefer to use the term collaborate on a resolution, and really love the "mutually satisfying agreement" presented above!
