Educating clients is vital. 1. Provide detailed planning and include all cost-related items so the client has a clear understanding from the start. 2. Be firm and transparent about what their budget will cover. 3. Guide clients towards their actual needs rather than just their wants. Sometimes what they desire isn't necessarily what they need.

Complexity requires Expense! As with the tech in our hands, the more complicated the project gets in terms of design, technical or purely aesthetical, the more expensive it becomes. Many architectural elements may seem simple at first, such as round columns, but in order to get them right, workers need to spend copious amounts of time for the finishing, same goes for tapered columns (behind which there're also further structural calculations). During the planning phase one can explain this to the client using various reference images (at various price points and complexity of design) along with the approximate cost/sft. or sm. This would allow the client to have a rough idea of how the prices would change with respect to their wants.

Depending on the client, I always find it best to ask them to do their own market research. For sake of an example, if a client wants me to design a Morrocan garden for them and bring me examples of luxury villas I tell them the products that have been used to construct them. The tiles, the patio, furniture, even the plants. I tell them where to find it and bring back their market research findings to me. Half the time they don't go through the trouble and have to trust me on it. The other half, it proves a point that forces them to either revaluate their budget or their expectations. Either case is a win because as a designer you don't want to overpromise.
