Most of us find networking challenging but it helps if you view it with a positive mindset as an opportunity to build new connections. Don’t set unrealistic expectations, I feel the event is a success if I have one or two good conversations. Prepare a short elevator pitch so people know what you do and what you’re interested in. If you don’t know anyone, be brave and approach someone on their own or a small group, most people will try to include you in the discussion. When you start a conversation, listen and try to find commonalities outside work such as what food do you like, what do you in your free time? Once you find this, it's easier to move to more substantial topics. Finally, follow up after the event with a quick email.

I have found this to extremely helpful to have in mind when heading into a networking event full of soon-to-be new friends, er, I mean, strangers ;) It’s an easy conversation starter, because either they will A) know a lot about it and will share, or B) they might be curious about it, too. 1??Think of a topic that interests you, but you are very early on in the process of learning about. 2??Think of 3 questions you could ask someone about it. 3??Approach others with a smile and one of those questions. It's a simple yet significant approach to calming the nerves, settling in, and enjoying the journey of meeting others.????

A fun habit that was shared with me early on in my career was to try to shake 100 hands, or share 100 smiles, at every event I attended. Your only objective is to reach 100 (or 20, 30, etc.) What it taught me was to be more open to experiences that only ended up being uncomfortable in my head.????

To be so indulged in listening to their story, that you ask follow-up questions to gain greater understanding. Seeking to serve at an event, rather than being served, will make the experience of networking move beyond a transactional encounter, into the world of a transformational one.

Keep your phone tucked away. There’s nothing that screams I don’t want to be here more than someone scrolling through their Instagram while other people are talking. Get there early, so that you don’t have to face an already crowded room, where everyone already seems to be talking to someone and you feel like you’re back at the playground trying to make a friend. Ask the host or event coordinator to introduce you. Uncross your arms. Smile. Turn your body to face the person you are speaking with. Make eye contact, and truly listen to them, asking meaningful questions. Don’t just wait for a moment when you can interject. Be a thoughtful conversationalist, encouraging and adding value.

Follow-up is a highly underutilized networking tool, and it’s often where people drop the ball. Simply following up sets you apart from the crowd. Aim to follow up within 24 to 48 hours of meeting someone; the longer you wait, the less likely the relationship will flourish. When you do reach out, reference your conversation to help them remember your interaction. If you promised to send something or follow up on a topic, be sure to do so. Delivering on your promises reinforces your credibility and strengthens the connection.
