If you have the luxury of longevity, you put extra time into the projects that develop early career researchers into future leaders and everything will somehow work itself out over the longer term with a bit of juggling. Add in some good patient benefits, some large impactful bodies of work and a few unusual ones in the mix and we have all done our best to make a diverse portfolio of projects. The answer is sector and site specific, so yes, your strategy should hopefully relate to where you need to be to deliver the objectives that best suit your organisation's and your research partner's aims.

The decision depends on each case. Some variables are: Timing and difficulty: If the project is easy and fast to complete, you want to pick up the low hanging fruit. Return on Investment: biggest bang for the money. Resources: Availability of human and financial resources. Strategic: The project completion may allow the company get into new markets or consolidate partnerships.

It depends on the type of the data (Qualitative, Quantitative), the time period you consider, and what exactly want to know from your data. First, you should assess and calculate the baseline for the data. then, measuring impact by?making a comparison between what would have happened differently in the absence of a certain output and estimating a cause-effect relationship. Ultimately, this way of looking at impact sees it as the extent to which an action has a particular effect.

Having weekly and monthly organization is essential to start turning the wheels of work and to motivate and coordinate the team. At the beginning of each week, the main issues to be addressed that week should be outlined, along with reviewing the results of the previous week's experiments. At the start of each month, a list of issues to be resolved should be established, prioritizing those that can have the greatest impact on the project's development.

Regular weekly meetings of direct project participants are essential for keeping the work on track if the project is one of the high priority (and what project is not?). Short monthly written reports will help to monitor progress of the group of scientists involved in the project. To show a "bigger picture" for upper management, a formal quarterly summary might be useful.
