Doing the right things, and not only working in the right way, requires a) a clear business strategy; b) governance. Governance is important, since else personal motivation may overshadow the company's strategic objectives. Sometimes you may find that alignment is difficult. In my experience this happens primarily in very large organizations, as one may have diverging internal interpretations of strategy. Look at my LinkedIn post "The Elusive Goal" for advice on how to formulate a strategic objective. It really helps sharpening a business strategy.

This is where the importance of governance structures comes into play to ensure alignment and ROI on IT projects. Every IT leader must establish an IT Steering Committee composed of members from across the organization. I'm always fascinated by the wealth of knowledge and ideas that the members bring to the table. Governance structure ensures that all stakeholders from different business units are involved and have a say in how technology should be used to support their operations. The next step is to define metrics and KPIs which will be used to measure the success of IT projects in supporting the strategic vision. Regular reviews of IT projects should be conducted. This requires senior management support and commitment.

Understand company mission, objectives and goals thoroughly well. Understand each of the project objectives thoroughly and possible benefits and outcomes expected from these projects. Analyse which projects benefits with your company objectives, values and correlate how they will benefit your company in coming years. Prioritise those projects based on maximum value and benefits whether quantitative or qualitative to your company after discussion with your team. Track, report and communicate those benefits value before starting the project to project beneficiaries such as users,shareholders, customers, employees and after its completion, police and 1-2 years later to fully get value from such projects. This will enable to get future approval
