If a team member overlooks my input, I’d first try to understand their perspective by having a calm, one-on-one conversation. I’d ask open-ended questions to see where they’re coming from and what might be causing the disconnect. From there, I’d share my thoughts again, but in a way that highlights how our collaboration benefits the bigger picture. I believe mutual respect comes from understanding and communication, so I’d focus on creating a space where we both feel heard and valued, rather than pushing my ideas. It’s about building trust and aligning our goals.

When kicking off a new project, having an SOW that clearly defines the scope, LOE, timing, pricing, invoicing and payment structure, and other key elements is key in ensuring mutual alignment in expectations in advance. With these boundaries established up front, it is much easier to adjust as needed, upon mutual agreement, via a contract ammendment. Refer back to the original agreement and discuss what out of scope items can be added (if any), including any additional cost, new expected timelines, etc. Having the original contract and any amendments in writing is an important part of maintaining a professional relationship with clients where both parties can effective establish and maintain boundaries and hold the other accountable.

"Firm boundaries foster clear expectations." To establish boundaries effectively with a client expecting extra services: Set boundaries: Clearly define what’s included in the scope of work. Inform: Explain they get what they paid for as per the contract. Be firm but polite: Keep a professional & respectful tone. Offer alternatives: Offer other solutions/services within the contract’s scope. Feedback: Boost their input to grasp their needs better. Document agreements: Keep logs of all discussions & agreements. Flexible terms: If needed, discuss contract amendments for added services. Regular reviews: Revisit & reinforce boundaries regularly to avoid misunderstandings. These steps set clear expectations & uphold a professional relationship.

Contract negotiations between people should be set at the start. There are small things I may do and choose not to charge for but otherwise my work needs to be paid for. I will simply present the client with a menu of products and prices to my clients to reference the extra time and pricing that needs to be negotiated if they are asking for more. Boundaries and expectations need to be set I stone.

To establish boundaries with a client expecting extra services, start by clearly communicating the scope of the original agreement. Politely reference the agreed-upon terms and explain what is included. If the client requests additional services, offer to discuss these as separate items, outlining any extra costs or adjustments. Be firm but professional, maintaining a tone of collaboration while ensuring clarity on what can reasonably be provided within the current arrangement. This approach maintains professionalism while protecting your time and resources.
