You're faced with a cheating accusation during an exam. How do you handle the situation effectively?

The step towards this is to check about any material available with students by searching and depending upon the material found the disciplinary action may be initiated against that student.

Gathering your facts. Has this happened before? Has the student been ignoring what is being taught in the classroom? Why did he or she decide to cheat vs listen to the review you had before the test? This student is usually on task, why didn’t he prepare like he normally does? You see he has the info at his hands because Julia has allowed the paper to be read by him. Then they both get caught. What is the policy at the school when this happens? Once you have talked to them both, you need to make a decision to deduct points from their score. Talking to parents and administration is another move to make sure everything is handled correctly. Then figure out a plan to help the students get back on track and be ready for the next exam.

If accused of cheating on an exam, remain calm and composed. Explain your actions clearly and concisely, providing any relevant evidence or justification. Request a fair and impartial review of the situation by the appropriate academic authorities. Cooperate fully with the investigation process

It is crucial to immediately establish if there is evidence within the immediate vicinity. Remain neutral and have an unbiased opinion as you gather more facts and information. Remain respectful and maintain communication. Once you have the facts the you can engage patties and take action using established procedures.

It is a necessary step towards an unbiased decision taken by you. When u are unbiased, this will create a healthy relationship between you and students. So hear students side and accordingly act.

In a high school setting, staying neutral ensures you are fundamentally considering the wellbeing of a student. I have never observed a student to cheat when all is well in their world. Cheating is born of desperation. Actively listening to the student perspective and asking carefully crafted questions will ensure they feel safe to expose the truth. Then, if our student has been cheating, we can provide support for their wellbeing and future success, maintain the relationship, and encourage integrity and accountability.

Knowing policy ensures that you don't make a goose of yourself with a possible false accusation, based on both assessment conditions and academic integrity policy. Refer to it every time you become suspicious.

It's our duty to share the details with students if they found in any cheating case. What are the options available with them , whether they can start writing the paper again with new sheet or can leave the sheet as it is before leaving the exam centre. We have to share the implications of such type of cheating issues in future too.

Students must be made fully aware of academic integrity expectations and consequences. This could be completed alongside unpacking assessment criteria. Examples and non-examples are beneficial. A non-example I use with junior high school is completing an assessment task with chat gpt. I then mark it in front of them against the assessment rubric. Due to the conditions and design of the task, the fully generated task falls short of passing criteria. We also discuss the need for content knowledge and skills; and correct the generated task together using the criteria sheet.
