One thing I have found very useful is to subject yourself and work output to constructive criticisms from your team and as well seek their knowledge about viable alternative solutions. Being an Engineering manager does not insulate you from your team's contribution towards the overall output but the collaborative efforts from each member of the team brings out the beauty, diversity and most convincing responses to your output. Learning is a continuous endeavor no matter which field you are in. For engineering, it is especially more so because of the constant discovery and application of new technologies. While reading books and learning from courses are a good start, we should always incorporate putting them into practice. One way you can do this is by creating the content yourself rather than just being the consumer. You can write articles online about your areas of expertise or volunteer your time for non-profit oriented institutions or as a participant in a mentorship program.

Continues learning is also very Important, which for me was learning new technologies, coding techniques and languages, and new devices we could integrate into our solutions.

My first engineering management position had me, not an engineer, managing degreed engineers not only older than I, but who had also been my boss at some point. I suffered from a bad case of imposter syndrome initially, but realized it wasn’t my job to have all the answers; rather my job was to ensure my team had everything they needed to be successful both long and short term and to use the unique skill set I possessed to facilitate that success for my team, our customers and our company. A leader does not have to be the most educated, the most experienced or have all the answers. A leader needs to be able to see the big picture, then understand, grow and leverage each team member’s strengths into a cohesive and effective result.

Emotional intelligence is key to effective leadership. Work on understanding your emotions, especially in high-stress situations. Practice mindfulness to maintain composure, and adopt a growth mindset – view challenges as opportunities to learn rather than insurmountable problems. This shift in perspective will not only help you manage your reactions but also set a positive example for your team.

Mindset drives your behavior which drives your actions which drives your results. If you don't believe that you can do something, you're likely to take actions in alignment with that belief. But if you believe you can, then your actions will change, and you'll get different results. I'm not talking about just putting on a happy face or "fake it til you make it," but rather, "practice until you become it." As you mindfully take actions in alignment with beliefs you want to have (like the confidence you're building), your mindset, confidence, actions, and results all shift together.

The best way to show up as authentic and confident is by first understanding yourself. What are your core values? For example, in my case, I believe in "accuracy" and so I will, most of the time, use empirical data and reference research when I speak about something. If your core value is "getting things done", you might show up as someone who expresses speed of delivery and execution as important even if it means there might be scrappy inaccurate areas. By knowing what values you prioritize, it will be easier to show what you can confidently and consistently do that others might get inspiration from.

Good planning based on realistic and accurate estimates is a significant part of engineering management and will go a long way in achieving project milestones and delivery. In order to minimize the stress and maximize productivity, it is very important to organize yourself and your team. And that is only possible through better planning. Always keep time on your side while making your plans and wherever possible, keep cushions and backup. Avoid strict commitments and challenge unreasonable requests and schedules. Anticipate the bumps and sharp bends and be ready to respond to tough questions. Do your homework before making any serious commitment so that you can follow through on it with ease. A good plan makes the work easier for your team
