Simplify language: Avoid using complex vocabulary or idiomatic expressions that may be difficult for English language learners to understand. Instead, use simple and clear language to ensure comprehension. Provide opportunities for practice: Allow English language learners to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English through activities such as group discussions, role-playing exercises, and writing assignments.

For students at different English proficiency levels, incorporating visual aids such as pictures and gestures can greatly enhance understanding, especially for those with basic English skills. These aids help bridge language gaps and make concepts more accessible. As students progress to higher levels, engaging them with interesting and relevant topics encourages active participation in conversations, fostering both language development and engagement with the content.

While communicating to English learners it's imperative to understand and identify the current level at which a learner is placed. Keeping this level in mind , an educator needs to adapt their teaching strategies and vocabulary. The need here is to use simple language that is easily comprehended by the learner mixed with new learning concepts that are provided in a ratio of 80:20 . Where 80 percent is something they are well aware of and hence helps build confidence, and 20 percent is new concepts so that the process of learning is constant and upgrades their knowledge. Moreover, using real life examples, anecdotes and keeping the context practical is also a great way to make learning more application based and pragmatic.

Get to know your learners. Build on what they already know. Take advantage of what they are interested in discussing. Be sensitive to their needs. Customize the lesson to their understanding first then fine tune.

Esto ayuda a conectar con los estudiantes para mantener un buen clima de comunicación en la clase y a nivel pedagógico ayuda a orientar las actividades para lograr una mejor identificación con el tema y por consiguiente mantener la motivación, incrementar la atención y lograr el aprendizaje previsto.

In my experience this is perhaps one of the most important bridges towards progress in education that can be made. Speaking slowly, taking time to make points and using personal reflections and inviting responses from Students is essential in teaching English and other subjects. The art of conversation should be given time and Students should be encouraged more to make efforts to communicate ideas in a peaceful setting. Are Students learning to be less vocal in this fast-fire world of school education where they move from class to class in large groups and are spoken to on mass for most of the day? I think so, and as a result Colleges see young people that think inwardly and struggle to express themselves. Fundamentals are being overlooked.

So, to better communicate with English Language Learners (ELLs), I can use clear and simple language, avoiding complex vocabulary and sentence structures. I can also use visual aids, gestures, and real-life examples to help convey meaning. Additionally, I can encourage questions and provide opportunities for practice and feedback to ensure comprehension.

As crucial as scaffolding is in the traditional classroom, its significance becomes even more pronounced in digital learning environments. When we do not share the same physical space as our students, it's almost impossible to engage them in the learning process without ensuring our activities are scaffolded and have clearly defined outcomes, the expectations regarding the time needed to do the task are clear, and ongoing feedback is provided. In designing lessons and activities, what can help teachers is a simple template, which incorporate all essential steps - e.g. a table which they can fill out. The E-tivities framework developed by Gilly Simon could help save us some time, but of course every teacher can develop what works for them.

Continuous support is crucial for students' progress in their English learning journey. Perspective: Adopt the scaffolding strategy by providing gradual support as students develop their skills. Start with simpler tasks and progress to more challenging ones as they gain confidence. Additionally, constructive and encouraging feedback is vital. Acknowledge students' efforts and offer specific guidance to help them improve. This not only motivates students but also empowers them to become independent and autonomous learners.

In my experience, scaffolding content with visuals, sentence stems, and modeling gives students the tools they need to not only access content, but also participate in their learning. Scaffolds empower ML students !!

Definitely! Monitor purposefully during exercises, whether in person or online. Encourage pair or group discussions before whole class feedback to support less confident learners. Allow time for your learners to discuss answers in pairs or small groups before you have whole class feedback. This really helps less confident people especially. And finally, NEVER ask ‘do you understand?’ – it’s just not a helpful question. If you want to know if they understand ask a question that will CHECK that they do.

Every teacher should know how to keep learners safe and give them the opportunity to express themselves using the language they are learning. I can also use collaborative learning activities that require ELLs to communicate and cooperate with their peers, such as group projects or discussions. By encouraging interaction and collaboration, I can create a supportive and engaging learning environment for ELLs.

First and foremost, a teacher/educator should get to know their individual students. This way they are familiarized with their learning styles (i.e. rote, Tt Ss centered, etc). By getting to know your students strengths and weaknesses, the teacher is able to better assess and help the student engage in self-directed learning while interacting with other students from different ethnic backgrounds.

I have observed English Language Learner (ELL) students actively adopting a proactive stance in dealing with potential issues and offering solutions. This is evident through their willingness to propose solutions to potential problems and their active participation in committees and initiatives that aim to promote the university's goals.

Being a communication coach and mentor is the final step in fostering effective communication with English Language Learners (ELLs). As an educator, modeling and promoting communication as a lifelong skill involves demonstrating effective strategies, reflecting on your practices, and actively seeking improvement. Additionally, empowering ELLs to share their communication goals, providing resources, and encouraging them to take initiative in their learning contributes to a shared responsibility for effective communication within the learning community.

In my view by modeling and promoting communication skills, I can help ELLs feel more confident and proficient in using English. I can demonstrate clear and concise language use, proper pronunciation, and effective non-verbal communication. I can also encourage ELLs to practice speaking, listening, reading, and writing in English through various activities. And my experience says, it definitely works.

As a language teacher, I share with my students when I learned English as a secong language, all my experiences, what I needed to do to improve and what I did. On my own, I do also try to reflect on how I communicate and do the class ir order to facilitate the learning process to my students.

One thing I found helpful, especially with younger learners or with beginner levels, is to model the communication. That is, provide examples of structures that they can repeat and adapt to their goals. It is also important not to over-correct in these cases, because it could lead to a loss of motivation or confidence. What worked well for me is silent correction, where you reply to their statement with the correct tense/word. For example: "My mom go to the supermarket every Wednesday" can be corrected as "oh, she goes every week?"

I had a student who came to my 9th grade class and did not speak a word of English. When I further assessed her, I discovered she had no knowledge of what a pen was used when given to her. I interviewed her siblings who were also in my class, and on the contrary, they were very bright open to learning. After speaking with them, I knew I had to speak to the parents. That is when I learned that in their culture, girls stay home to help Mom and boys go to school. How do you teach English to a 9th grader who has never been in school before? Simple, start with the basics, the way children learn at the elementary level. This student was smart! She learned the alphabet and then to read! I introduced her to content vocabulary and she soared!

I have found knowledge of my learners' ability to be of paramount importance as it helps me to differentiate their learning accordingly. Interactive tasks like interviews, impromptu and prepared speeches develop listening and speaking skills. I would also use audios and videos to enhance the learners' communication. A rich reading environment is essential for enhanced communication. I would generate collaborative speaking and written activities related to the reading material. Role play, debate and drawing are examples of follow up activities I would set. I would also arrange for outdoor tasks that my learners would report on, or draw about. Building on skills learned, and developing new skills augments communication mastery.

Simplify instructions and explanations by breaking them into manageable chunks and using context-rich examples. Leverage visual aids, realia, and multimedia to reinforce key concepts. Consistently check for understanding through comprehension questions and prompts for students to rephrase or summarize. Encourage an inclusive classroom where learners feel safe making mistakes as they practice productive skills. Explicitly teach learning strategies like contextual guessing and circumlocution to foster autonomy. Most importantly, be patient, celebrate their efforts, and create an engaging, supportive environment.
