I think the most important skill in data science is the capability of asking the right questions. If you can ask the right questions to your data, you will be able to extract quality insight from the data. You need to learn statistical analysis, interpret the results. Without having the proper knowledge of feature selection you cannot even improve the performance of your ML model. Knowing a programming language is mandatory, better if you can learn python. It will make your life easier when you will advance and start using AI.

I found my experience to be the best selling point for any job. New experiences open new doors - the more you have it, it will be easier to understand the requirements and to meet them. Learning doesn't end with graduation. Build a strong portfolio by working on real-world projects. Participate in competitions, it will help build your organization, prioritization and meeting deadline skills. Work on your network by building relationships within the industry. Online communities, engaging on LinkedIn and other platforms is a great networking tactic that can lead to job referrals. Focusing on practical experience, continuous learning, and networking will increase your chances of landing your first data science job.

While building skills, we should focus on the application of skills we are learning rather than focusing on proficiency. For example: If you are learning PySpark, you should focus on applying it to real-world data processing tasks rather than just mastering the syntax. For example, try using PySpark to analyze a large dataset from your field of interest, build a data pipeline, or solve an actual business problem. This hands-on approach will help you understand how PySpark fits into larger data workflows and give you practical experience that's more valuable than simply memorizing functions or syntax. Basically, focus on impact and application of the skill instead of of solely concentrating on technical proficiency.

Gain practical experience in Data Science by working on personal projects, internships, Kaggle competitions, and open-source contributions. This will help you build a strong portfolio, demonstrate your skills, and increase your chances of securing a job in the field.

Try to grab opportunities as a freelancer or as an intern to hone your confidence as well boost your profile. In addition to that, try to work in multiple communities & participate in competitions/hackathons (Kaggle is one platform to use) that offer you a very wide variety of projects that will help you think using multiple different angles. You can work on personal projects as well to solve any problem you might have faced, this help you to propose a real time model/solution to a problem which may be seen as a potential startup.

One of the best way to gain experience according to me is by actively participating in Kaggle's community challenges like Tabular playground series and other competitions. Tabular series comes every month with a new types of artificial data which are challenging to tackle. Community is also very supportive and you'll be able to learn a lot from them.

For gaining practical experience, I can suggest these ways: 1. Participating in datathons on Kaggle or Analytics Vidya 2. Volunteering your data science skills at non-profit or even profitable organisations 3. Finally, build real products or work on real problems. It will not only give you enough insights to talk about during your interview but also teach you challenges and techniques that you would never learn from working on toy projects. Toy projects usually follow a happy path whereas real projects have ups and downs that makes you a better data scientist

One important input which I got from my seniors is to not ask for referrals to random strangers. I have learnt this the hard way. What you can do is approach people in the team which is looking to hire and understand their requirements and what approach they took to get that role. You can talk to them about what skills you possess, how you can align your skills with their role. I believe if they feel that you are well qualified to be a part of their team, they’ll help you by pushing your candidature. P.S We are in the same boat and even I am learning how to network smartly!

Specifically in Data Science, you may be stuck with some kind of problem or you might need advice in making something possible, there you can take the help of the network that you must have built. You should attend seminars, webinars, workshops, and kind of conference which is related to Data Science, as there you get to know a lot of new things, which might solve something that you are working on currently. In addition to that, you should try to contact to people at these places which are relevant to what you are working on, this will create a synergy, which can create wonders. P.S. Understand that a recruiter is usually not a tech person. Also understand that they have hundreds if not thousands other resumes to look at apart from yours. In an effort to make your resume ATS friendly, do not stuff it with technical keywords. Not all companies rely fully on resume parsers. Let a non-tech friend or a family member take a look at your resume and ask them which part is boring them. A recruiter will only look at your resume for longer than a few seconds. They usually set a filtering criteria and remove resumes out of their sight. Do not bore them with technical stuff. Rather add projects that they’ll find interesting, add skills that they are interested in, add numbers to grab their attention.

First of all, Data Science is an interdisciplinary field, so don't hesitate to emphasize why your unique background is complementary to the role. Second of all, focus on the projects that you worked on and their impact. - If it was part of your coursework, focus on how you added value to the assignment - If you had an internship, focus on the methods and how you applied them to create an impact - If you had a past role that wasn't in data science, focus on how you understood the business problem and applied an analytical perspective to solve it Work you've done on real-world projects helps the person reading your resume understand how you would perform in the role.

Always create your resume without fancy designs or patterns, remember your resume has to be ATS proof, otherwise, irrespective of how much important & relevant information you have added, will be wasted as your resume will not even reach to the recruiter for scanning. You should add the most relevant keywords, & projects that aligns with the job profile. Also, you must be able to differentiate closely linked profiles yourself like Data Science, AI Engineer, and ML Engineer, only after that, you can craft an appropriate resume. Remember, in resume, "One size fits all" doesn't work. Hence, add all the relevant stuff like projects, keywords, achievements, publishings, patents (if applicable) in your resume & keep it nice & simple.

Try to schedule mock interviews, research about the general questions that are asked in the interviews, understand them clearly, & prepare your answers for the same. Make sure that you are very calm & showcasing a nice behaviour, otherwise, in case you are very arrogant, then you might get rejected on the non-cultural fit basis irrespective of your skills.
