By investing in certifications, you can distinguish yourself from other candidates who may not have formal proof of their expertise.

Some ways to get started are: Develop relevant skills - hands on experience if given change, learn the basics, some certs are available for beginners. Build resume/profile that is strong with appropriate skills and experience. Network with industry professionals that includes joining some communities and events. Apply to internship programs targeting companies that have innovative outlook. Prepare yourself for soft skills. Stay updates and continue to learn along with engagements in volunteer or open source communities. See if you can get a mentor and a guide who is professional and have solid experience in the field.

I highly recommend asking family members to see if they know someone in Cybersecurity. Many of my non-cyber security family members and friends point people toward me so that I can provide them guidance on getting into the cybersecurity field. I’ve spoken with college students and many people who are hoping to establish themselves in a different career field. I have the opportunity to ask them what their interests are so I can guide them to some unique areas of cybersecurity such as OT security.

Most good jobs are gotten through knowing someone. You'll need to get out to the local meetups, conferences and friends groups to land that first internship / job. Keep networking even after you have landed the internship and make sure you add them to your linkedin contacts so you don't loose track of them as they will be your bridge to the next opportunity.

You can begin by reaching out to professionals in the industry via LinkedIn. Go to related industry conferences, workshops, and webinars - even the virtual ones - on what you find interesting in order to make connections with potential mentors or employers. Connect with those in cybersecurity groups and forums. Not only will this give you more exposure, but it also proves that there is a lot of internship opportunities out there unpublicized.

Professional networking can help you throughout your career to find job opportunities or uncover opportunities that might not have been available otherwise. Use social media platforms like LinkedIn and start engaging/communicating with people who work in the cybersecurity career field. The more that you interact with people, the better they will get to know you and the more top of mind you will be for them. Workshops and conferences are other great opportunities to network with people who can likely help you in your career.

Mentors should have more experience than you because much of the value they provide is from the lessons they have learned throughout their careers. Remember, you can still have mentors of varying experience levels, but somebody with the same level of experience as you is unlikely to be a very valuable mentor for your career.

Some experience is better than none in cybersecurity. Certainly, the value and quality of your experience will vary based on the type of activity you do. For example, a project you create in your home lab may give you hands-on experience with a specific tool, but it will differ from a full-time job experience. Regardless, any time you can add experience bullets to your resume, you are increasing the attractiveness of your resume. Volunteering is another excellent way to get quick experience in a situation that is likely desperate for people to help.

Interns are looking for "apprenticeships". With a glut of experienced professionals willing to work for less, companies are less inclined to expend on apprentices. What do they need? Someone who can hit the ground running and "do the job"? How can a student do that? 1) Learn the job 2) Do the job 3) Pitch their differentiator. Learn using targeted courses - Python, NIST. Do by contributing to open source projects - OpenSSF, CSA, OWASP - all these are open and looking for volunteers - coders and non-coders. The obvious side effect is that they are working with professionals who will refer them into unknown opportunities and vouch for the quality of their work.

From my time interviewing, I found that Capture The Flags was among the topics of discussion. I participated in the NCL solo competitions and found that I enjoyed scanning and reconnaissance, web exploits, and learned a lot about cybersecurity domains. This was a great place to start as I moved to Hack the Box CTFs because I actively participated in them, and was inspired to create my vulnerability management homelab. This sparked my exploration into virtualization and cloud architecture. You never know what passion you'll find in such competitions until you do them.

Cybersecurity is real-world, so your second task should be to look for projects that you can get a chance of working on whether it's in coursework or volunteering freelance. Take part in community-run Capture The Flag (CTF), or help/maintain some open-source security projects that demonstrate you can put your skills to the real-world test. You can use these experiences to feature on your resume and discuss during interviews to reflect that you are practical and have an inclination toward the field.
